View Full Version : "At what rpm should I shift?" -- mk3 turbo gear ratios

I have four tables I will be posting, one for each transmission/differential combination for the 7m-gte. The idea is that you can see what rpm range you will have in each gear. For example, if you always shift at 6000 rpm, you will be in 2nd gear from 3500rpm-6000, 3rd gear from 3930-6000, 4th gear from 4820-6000, and 5th from 4095-6000 (assuming you have an 87/88 5spd). 3500rpm in 2nd gear might be too low of an rpm -- so you could wait until 6500 to shift out of first. On the other hand, 4820rpm might be too high of an rpm to start out 4th in, so you might short-shift out of 3rd gear.
Basically look at your dyno (or a dyno of someone with similiar modifications) and see what rpm range will give you the most horsepower. This way you'll get a pretty good idea of the shift points in each gear (just remember the rear-wheel horsepower is a little higher in lower gears due to gear-multiplication so you might want to wind those gears out more). Enjoy

Good post Jeff and Im glad you opened the thread....
With my 60-1 trim ct I make most of my torque down low and really dont produce that much hp so it would beneficial to shift sooner than someone with a higher flowing turbo.
Now the question is do we want to keep our engines in the meaty part of the torque curve or horsepower curve? It has been brought up before but we never came to a final conclusion.

not accurate for the autos... the auto cars have additional drivetrain loss thru the torque convertor that you didnt account for.
Silver88Turbo
12-05-2003, 02:44 PM
Drivetrain loss has nothing to do with the speed of the tires at a specific rpm/gear....especially considering stock torque converters lock before 3000 rpm.

wrong. since we're talking about slippage, the input shaft of the automatic trans could not be spinning at the same RPMS as the crankshaft due to the TC's loss. but are you sure the stock TC locks before 3000 rpm in every gear under WOT?

Maybe you are right...I hate autos anyways :p
I am not SURE the TC locks before 3000 rpm but I cant imagine it would slip any higher than that...

oh yea, lets see if you hate the auto i'll be running in a few months. ;) ;)
you can be pretty sure the TC only locks under cruise.

the 89-92 cars only rev to 6500, and again i just pointed out how it would be impossible for the auto car to actually get to that mph due to loss thru the TC

yeah not sure if rev limit is 6750 or 6800. the 184.4 is based on 6750...

Lockup occurs at >35% throttle opening in 2nd gear, or if OD is off in 3rd gear at >5% throttle and comes on at 50-53mph, or in OD with >5% throttle at 37-45mph (depending on being in Norm or PWR).

ok, i still stand by my point. if your car has the power to get up to that high of speeds in overdrive you will blow the living shit out of the tranny anyway.
ma71supraturbo
12-05-2003, 07:05 PM
Aha! my transmission is supposed to shift into 3rd when in the 2 range. What kind of stupid shit is that? I've always wondered why I could never get over ~5900rpm before it shifts -- cause the damn ECT wants to prevent "overrev."
^ this is probably a significant reason why stock auto's are slower than stock manuals!

I've gone 160-165 (est based on being that much past 150) with no detectable slippage. Automatics are good for 300rwhp, and that should get you to 170-180mph

so if you go auto->5 speed would the gears still be the same? (180 mph topspeed)

Wow  In case you are serious (I can't tell). no. The gear ratios are listed on each of the first four posts and they are different

Instead of just looking for the "meaty" part of the dyno curve what you really should do is plot RWTQ Vs. Vehicle speed. You can get the raw data from the dynojet and then multiply it by the gear ratios for each gear to get the torque at the wheel, plot that vs the speed for that gear at that rpm point. Make a plot for each gear, where the lines cross is where you want to shift. This way you will always be getting the maximum acceleration from the car.

i agree 100%. but wouldn't it be easier to just look at your dyno sheet and just shift a couple of hundred RPM's before your torque curve peaks? if your peak is 4100rpm, you might want to shift around 3500rpm (according to the first dyno graph posted). that way you can still get some kind of acceleration before the torque curve starts to decline. if the torque curve actually stays flat all the way to redline then i would consider shifting right at the beginning of the curve.
just jump in your car starting in 2nd gear and take it straight to 3500. take note of the speed... that's where you want to get out of 1st gear.
now in 3rd gear, take it to 3500rpm. note the speed... that's where you want to shift out of 2nd.
and so on.
wouldn't that be about the same thing?

:ghey: taking it to redline isn't always the best thing to do. maybe in a Honda Civic Si, but not in our Supras. we actually have something called a torque curve that usually doesn't peak at redline.
