View Full Version : How To: 89+ non-airbag steering wheel on pre-89

As many of you know in 89 the MKIII got a nice new steering wheel, along with many other changes, specifically the cruise switch beside the steering wheel was removed, replaced with a button on the steering wheel and a cruise light on the tach.

Many people with pre-89 cars wish to use the new steering wheel, however they run into a problem of how to get the button on the steering wheel to work. Most people just leave it doing nothing and keep the stock switch. That obviously wasn't an option, since I'd hate to have a switch that does nothing, lol.

When you want to use the 89+ steering wheel on a pre-89 car, you're going to need the following things:

- 89+ Non-Airbag Steering Wheel
- 89+ Non-Airbag Steering Column Slipring
- 89+ Cruise Main Relay
- Another Coin Holder
- 89+ Tachometer (not really necessary)

The tach isn't necessary unless you want to know if cruise is on or not.

Here's what you do:

1. Take steering wheel off
2. Take plastic from under steering column off
3. Take plastic from steering column off
4. Disconnect 2 connectors going to steering column wiring.
5. Unscrew combination switch (part with turn signal/wiper control) and take it out
6. Take off the slipring from the combination switch (either pull out the connectors or cut the wires)
7. Wire in the new slipring (plug in connectors or solder wires), run the white/blue wire through the extender, but don't connect it into the connector, it's the cruise main wire.
8. Take out the cruise switch, the connector for it plugs right into the 89+ cruise relay, but some wires have to be changed.
9. Cut the wire going to pin 4 on the cruise main switch connector, solder in an extension from it to the white/blue wire left over from the combination switch
10. The wire previously going to pin 4 on the cruise main switch connector goes to the "CRUISE" terminal on the back of the gauge cluster (it is the ground side of the cruise LED, if you don't have an 89+ cluster, the "CRUISE" spot won't be easy to recognize, I'd check the LED to find which side is ground).
11. The "POWER" terminal on the gauge cluster cruise light gets +12V (you can jump it from an IGN+ terminal on the gauge cluster)
12. Pin 1 on the cruise main switch connector gets grounded (you can splice it together with the pin 3 wire, as it is ground as well).

Here are the pin numbers:

On the switch/relay:

On the connector plug:

At this point, put it all back together, the steering wheel will plug right in. You can put the cruise relay where you like, I put it under the steering column on the left side. The empty spot where the cruise switch was can be filled with a coin holder from another car.

Here's a few pics of my 88 (I also went to the 89+ black switches on the left side of the steering wheel).

Note: You can also use the complete 89 combination switch, you'll just have to cut the white/blue wire from the connector, but you'll get the new turn signal/wiper control, which is nice IMO (you can see them in my pic).

Note: this could of course all work with the airbag steering wheel as well, and the directions would be the same for wiring it up, but I don't know how the slipring would work out and stuff, and I never tested it, so I don't know about it.

I did this mod, however my gauge cluster doesnt have the cruise light (i think you are the only 88 with that

hey cool, but why is your hazard switch left of the steering wheel? did you relocate that too? my hazard switch is just above the cig. lighter... what gives jeff?

Yeah I relocated that a while back, took me about 3 hours too, lol.

Didn't quite get everything worked out. I wired it a tad different than I said to in my write up, heh, and now I'm having a problem with the cruise not turning off if my lights are on, I'll change it tomorrow and report back. I'd suggest cutting the wire to pin 5 for anyone doing this, don't know why it would make a difference, since it's supposed to just be grounded, but it was part of the illumination circuit, so I have a feeling it's my problem, and I spliced my pin 1 into pin 5 instead of pin 3, thinking it was just ground, I guess it's not... though Toyota's wiring diagrams say it is...

Oh well, I'll find out for sure with a multimeter and some testing tomorrow. Other than that, it's all working extremely well.

I have also swapped to the 89+ wheel on my car. Everything works good exept my horn doenst work anymore. Does anyone know the wiring for the horn button?

Yeah I saw yours Randy, I didn't realize you had hooked up the cruise main switch on it though...

Basically the horn wire coming to the steering wheel is grounded to the steering column (I believe), and that activates the horn relay.

Here's a diagram:

Update: I changed my wiring in my car to the way I outlined in my post and it's working correctly now. I didn't try reconnecting pin 5 (since I had to cut it), but I was getting funky readings from it (not what they should have been according to my wiring diagram anyway, lol, but whatever.

If you do it, you can try leaving pin 5 connected, but there's no real point, if you do and it works fine, that's good, please post about it, but I see no reason to try it, cutting a wire and heatshrinking/taping it up is no big deal, and it will work for sure.

i.e. on the US/CAN spec. supra, the cruise control is turned off when the lights are turned on?
sorry for the dumb question, but that was new to me. quite interesting, though....

I just put the 90+ wheel on my 89... I took the Airbag out but I was able to get the cruise working. I can give you the wireing diagram if anyone is interested.

did 92's have airbags?.. i know the steering wheel looks diffrent

90-92 US models had airbags, 92 Canadian models had airbags. The wiring should be the same, and putting it in an 89 would be real easy since 89 had the same relay setup. This post was more about how to get the newer cruise main button working with older cars that originally had a switch for it. I just wasn't sure how the slipring, etc would work on the older cars with the airbag wheel.

No, it was a problem with the way the relay was wired up. On the pre-89 cruise switch there was a light in there that lit up the "CRUISE" part when you had the interior illumination on. Pin 5 was supposed to be the ground wire in that circuit, but it switched from ground to 12V when I had the lights on, it was weird, but I'm not looking into it further because it's not needed for the 89+ relay anyways.

Something I noticed a while back, didn't post about it, but countries outside of the US got the 89+ steering wheel (no airbag) like we did, but theirs had 4 seams in the leather, while ours had 2, I can't figure out why, but they did...

How about doing up a non-Supra steering wheel and keeping the control buttons? How would you go about that? :ugh2:

I'm sure a few 50-cent buttons fabricated to the bottom of a aftermarket wheel would work fine, but which wires run what?
