For those of you from NY...

Will I be able to register my supra over there without having cats?
It's a 1995, and i'm not sure of their motor vehicle laws...

Thanks in advance!

You can reg. (DMV won't know you don't have them) but you have to find someone that will inspect it. I pay $100 so mine will pass.

If your car is registered in the 5 boroughs (maybe LI and other surrounding counties, not sure) you need to do emissions as well as visual/safety. It will say on your sticker 'NYMA' for ny metro area. If you can get it registered to an address outside of NYMA all you need is safety/visual, and the fee is only like 30 bucks or so. Most guys usually pass you without putting the car up on a lift to check for cats cuz theyre busy and its not worth it for them.

There are plenty of places that will pass you for some cash under the table here in NYMA - for between $ 50-100, depending on if you know the guy or not.

you can register it but need to find someplace special to get an inspection. Chris L. was telling me about your inspection issues in MA today actually..

Maybe in the New York Metro area, but when they implement emissions testing in other counties in New York I believe any car older then 1995 model year is exempt. Later.

I'm pretty sure it was a state law.

Collectors insurance = Visual/safety inspection only.

All cars registered in Rocklin county and south need NYMA (your registration will say *NYMA* on it)inspection (sniffer test) and will fail without cats. Cars registered in all other counties need the new NYVIP inspection. 96 and newer (OBDII) cars get hooked up to a diag maching and checked by DMV in Albany over a dialup connection before your inspection is approved. Pre 96 cars get visual inspection. You'll be hard pressed to buy a sticker even for a pre 96 car right now unless you really know the guy well. DMV is like hawks becasue the new NYVIP just went into affect Dec 1st. They are sending DMV inspectors into inspection shops all over to make sure people are doing it right. These guys are undercover, and you loose your licesnce and the shop gets suspended if you get caught selling a sticker as well as hefty fines. The stakes are high, so unless you're in good with the guy doing it, you'll be hard pressed to find someone that stupid.

Yep. Make sure you clear any and ALL codes before you head to inspection. The DMV will be checking that on all OBD-II cars instead of the sniffer test. O2 sims are now the greatest invention in the world! No cats and I'll still be able to pass (no codes!)

This thread came up in a search. I just wanted to make a correction. Do not clear trouble codes before going for inspection. This will also reset all of your I/M flags (what the DMV is looking at) and you will automatically fail inspection. Same goes if your battery was dead or disconnected. The car needs to be driven for at least a week or two after any codes are cleared or battery power has been lost.

Yup, he's 100% right. Clearing codes = automatic failure.

Your ECU needs to show that all self check emissions systems have completed a drive cycle and are in full ready.
