your right. i don't have one... yet, but the price of NAs are hella affordable. I'm sure i can find a theft recovery NA for like 5k.

I think the price you would spend on the TT motor, Tranny, brakes labor and misc part you would need to swap it to a true TT would be close to what you would spend on a high milage TT. not to mention the down time. Also it would be a big hassle to find a complete motor tranny ect... if your trying to do this on such a small budget, shouldnt even bother might aswell save up and get a TT , this hobby ain't cheap

I know this. I haven't done thorough research, but i've read plenty of threads that concerned the contrast of money spent between a TT and an NA. Money isn't an issue for me, although downtime is, but i think the experience of learning how its done hands on would be priceless. Braggin' rights would be hella coo too :D

If downtime is an issue.... don't do it!

Yeah, hes done the swap before. If it weren't for his original thread I wouldn't have figured that these swaps were legal in california.

its been a known fact that these swaps are legal for a while now. But most people have been opting for a basic na-t setup which would get you 350-380 hp on 8psi, completely bolt on running abt 3000 in parts. Just that in cali, it is jus like having a single turbo supra, "frowned" upon and then some by certain authorities. Thats why im considering a bpu swap mated to the 5 spd. And if i get tired of the gearing of the 5 spd, swap out the diff for a TT auto diff, which bolts right in without modification to anything. So you have a bpu supra 5spd w/ auto gearing

No worries man. If you can install an intake or exhaust or turbo kit then you can do this. It is actually really easy. If you want to mod the engine/rebuild it then that is a different story, but in general, a swap is just a bolt on affair with very light wiring work.

I'm surprised everyone didn't know this was legal. Technically speaking the engine just needs the be the same year or newer. But since all years of the turbo are the same you would only need to make sure to run the correct ecu (no OBDI in an OBDII year car).
Also if you do a swap in Cali its important to have receipts for the new parts to verify that they were not stolen. This is more of an issue with cars like civics where if they see a swap they will ask for proof of ownership of the engine. If you can provide receipts they >might< tow the car (if there is any doubt about the engine).
I don't think you could run a modified head on the J-Spec engine unless the introduction of the EGR on the engine looks totally stock. Techincally I don't believe the J-SPEC engine is street legal since it did not originally come with egr and has different turbos. If they check numbers on the block you might have a problem. Although if I was running a J-Spec engine with EGR added (and a US spec ecu) I probably wouldn't bother to get certified as it probably would pass smog fine and would look stock. Where as if you tried to get your sticker they might detect that it wasn't a US spec engine and fail you.

I knew it was legal, that's why I went this route with a USDM motor. What I didn't know was that it's not considered an "engine conversion" by the books. I went to the ref to smog for no reason. They didn't check the engine's ID number nor did they ask for proof of purchase of the engine. Needless to say, I didn't get a BAR sticker... but that's because the ref said I didn't need one. http://www.wcfords.com/ubb/images/smilies/shrug.gif

so what you are saying is that a USDM swap is legal going from NA to TT. How profound
