View Full Version : Austin Hail Storm!!!

austin ppl.
severe hail hit some parts of austin last night. Lets just say it was scary and I was glad my SC300 and accord were safely in the garage, until my friend reminded me my IS300 was still at BL
anyone got unlucky?
question: i know if you have comprehensive insurance, hail is covered totally without a deductable, but will your title be a salvage title due to hail, or will it still be considered clean title?

I was fine, but did you hear about all those birds that got owned from the hail last night? Buncha dead little guys lying on their back with their scrawy legs in the air.

That storm was nuts, I thought the windows in my apt. were gonna explode. My wife's car got dinged up pretty bad, still trying to decide if it's worth it to file a claim ('96 ford escort). My 4-runner was out there too, but it's already too dented to be able to tell:)

me and Jen (LittleSupraNovice) were down there at her house in Leander, that stuff was nuts, kinda like what we get up here in MO. I didn't know it did that down in Texas. Her parent's 02 Silverado got hit pretty good, but both of them work for state farm, so its all good.

yea, my car has full coverage too.
but a car will hail damage, does it still retain a clean title?

It just depends on the dollar amount of damage, and who you are insured with. If the damage is under 500$, you still retain a clean title, at least with State Farm, but double check my information, 'cause i could be wrong.

Title will be still be clean as long as the insurance does not total the car. The insurance company will total the car if the cost of repairing is more the worth of the car.
I doubt your IS will loose its clean title. But make sure they try to do PDR (paintless dent repair). Repainting the whole car will affect its value.

Hail damage should also already be covered under your policy, so depending on your deductable, you won't have to pay out anything.
kuuligan

how does PDR work? Knock out the dents or simply replace the affected body parts?
Will be taking it to an official Lexus body shop so I hope do good work
thanks for the good info guys!
SiFreak

PDR is taking out the dents from the original body panels with tools such as suction cups, glue guns, special hand tools and taking off certain interior panels.

PDR, if done right, should not affect your paint at all. Most times, will turn out looking better than when you took it in.
kuuligan
03-28-2005, 07:31 AM
what about if the paint was scratched from the hail?
for them to "pop out" the dents, sounds like hard work as there could be hundreds of dents
:(

VERY rarely will you see paint chips from hail, if ever. I worked for Progressive for almost 3 years and handled the biggest hail catastrophe in company history up in Dallas a few years ago. There were cars with literally 1000+ hail hits, but no paint damage. Hail will almost NEVER take out paint. That's almost always how you know when someone is trying to pull one over on you. If paint is chipped it's either damage taht was there before or someone caused it intentionally (happens more than you think).
Depending on the shop you go to, you WILL have to pay your deductible. Sometimes body shops will work out deals with you, but hail is an act of god, hence Comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive in TX always requires a deductible per state law. There are some smaller companies that get out of that on a technicality, but the big companies don't do it.
PDR doesn't have to go to any Lexus place. You will get ripped if you take it to any Lexus place because they won't do PDR. There are places that are JUST PDR places. That's who you take it to. And as said before, many times it comes out looking even better than before it was damaged.

I just talked to my insurance company agent and she told me I dont need to pay a deductable.
She said the hail storm is not considered an "accident" but rather a natural disaster and my policy does not require a deductable.
i guess i am happy to hear that?

In addition to the ones I got at the stores.....
No biggie..:D :D
North Austin looked like a war zone, a bunch of dead birds, broken windows....tree branches and leaves all over the place
.....reminded me of war back home ( El Salvador)

Yes, you should be very happy to hear that. Just make sure you take it to a place you trust to do the repair job right, or then you really will have to pay out-of-pocket to fix whatever they f'd up, becasue your policy most likely won't pay for it again. Hail is a prety common occurance for us in texas.

ick, then yea, don't get happy about it too quick. your agent explain to you how it all works though, im assuming? definately ask him/her questions if you have them.
btw, where 'bouts are you in austin, both my mom and an uncle are agents for state farm, and my dad and another aunt work in claims.

hail won't give your car a salvage title unless they total out the car and you buy it back from them... otherwise they just fix it and nobody knows

I've used Dent Magic on Burnet Road, just south of Anderson, amazing results, you absolutely cannot tell the dent was ever there. A friend of mine had his truck caught in a hail storm. They literally took out about 100 dents, not a clue of 1 ever being there.

I just got my car estimated at Farmer's, they totalled it.
It's a 98 civic cx w/ 65K miles, damage is not too bad at all.
I guess they total it because the price of repair is really close to the price of the car.
I will be getting a call soon about the payout.
How much should I be looking to get? Retail or Private Party?

they do pay-outs a little different than if you were selling your car. You should get almost the price of the car.

a car is hardly ever totaled or given a salvage title due to hail damage alone. its a very rare occurance.

insurance companies will give blue book price and deduct non-related hail damage (depreciation)
so, you're not going to get much.
Good luck anyways, some insurance co's are better than others.

I heard the Hudson Bend area got badly pelted by the hail.
Saw a accord from that area, seems like steam roller went to town with it.
Can your mom give discounts? I got a house, 2 cars and a clean driver's record. :D

LOL just depends. i know that with state farm, you can take online defensive driving once a year, not because of a ticket, and it lowers your insurance 15%, but thats only in texas i think.

yes, it applies to anyone rated on the policy, that has a valid drivers license. Just talk to your agent about it, though i dont know if it is something that Farmers does.
