Sorry if this has been asked a million times but is a JDM 7mgte ('88 spec) plug and play for my for my current USDM 7mgte? Just asking because I found one with good compression for just under $1000 while the good compression US version is about $1400...
TIA,
Wade T.

Yeah harness should be plug and play. Some of the gauges will be metric, so you will have to put your US motor sending units on it. The oil pressure sending unti specifically.

Hope it helps.

yup. the engines are the same except the jdm is missing egr. the wiring harness from japan (if you get it) won't work due to short length. and yes, a few of the sending units must be swapped for us spec ones....

Hey, the engines are pretty much plug and play. I would change out the oil pan, there have been instances where they don't fit. You might want to change the crank pulley, as I heard there are different harmonic balancers for the AT and MT. I don't know if this is true, but why not play it safe. Also, the oil pressure sender gives out different voltage for a metric reading, so swap that out. Sometimes, the thermostat housing needs to be swapped, or plugs spliced, and if you have a 5 speed, there will be an extra sensor near the thermostat for the od. I would change out the rear main seal, valve seals, spark plugs, timing belt, etc. etc. etc. Also, I sell Japanese engines (7M-GTE), however, I have a severely restricted supply.
Another thing to mention, just because you think you are getting a good deal on a JDM engine does not mean you are getting the best engine. Just like the dealer auctions in America, where the new car dealers get the best used cars to sell, and the crappier cars go to the public auctions, the crappy engines are sold to the dealer cheaper. It is hard to tell who is getting which engine, but that is how it works. We have a family member in Japan, so we get the first pick. Too bad the 7M-GTE supply is dropping.

Also, if you get an engine from another year, ie an 87 engine into a 91, you need to swap out the tb and the motor mounts. The TPS's are not compatible between the years. There rest position is different, one is horizontal, one is vertical.
