I know there's prolly been a lot of pages explaining free or cheap mods but I wanted to do one that listed as many as we all knew of. If there is a thread that you know of that lists one or more of these type of mods, please put up a link. Please don't post unless you're contributing.
My favorite free mod so far would have to be the Sogi Short shifter.
http://www.supras.com/sogi/techtips/1_engine/1017_MKIII_mod_short_shift/index.html
Remove the resonator on the intake and replace it with a piece of 3" light steel tubing or PVC.
Gutting the cat or welding a section of steel pipe through the cat to free up exhaust flow.
Will post more as I think or find them

$10 4' Sears dryer duct, the nice rigid stuff. runs from just next to my fog light up to the snorkel hose opening.
$2 switch and wiring jumper to the diag box so that I can read codes from my ECU without opening the hood (or bonnet as it's known elsewhere).

disconnect the temp sensing unit (I did this by accident while changing the oip pressure sending unit) your guage will always read at the bottom but my car seems to have more power at the low end and idles steady at around 1200.
makenzie71
12-26-2002, 12:46 AM
So what does disconnecting your temp sensor do?
ma71supraturbo
12-26-2002, 03:20 AM
there are two temp sensors if I recall correctly. Disconnecting the gauge wire will do nothing except leave you in the dark when you blow a coolant hose, disconnecting the other temp sensor will result in the car being in "warm-up" mode with a rich fuel mixture. You can expect better throttle response and partial throttle power, but you'll have the same WOT power and shorter spark plug life. Disconnecting the O2 sensor accomplishes the same thing.
altimasupra
12-26-2002, 05:56 AM
haha, yea my O2 sensor doesnt work... it sucks.
but how about that taillight mod for us pre-89 owners? chipping out the orange plastic and putting in an amber bulb?
there was a thread not too long ago.
we should make a sticky, and call it: The Ghetto Supra Tuning Bible, your ticket to eating rice, with just 40 dollars!

1. foglights gone- airduct<tranny cooler
2.pvc ic lines-nice!, and full length, almost no rubber.
3.no mo charcoal canister or egr valve-block offs and room for a catch can.
4.homemade boost controller-11.5lbs daily
5.FIPK wall-had it till i got the ic lines done, now i have to redo, worked exellent as a bug catcher though.
6.no hood rubber- if you do this, put a cap on the gas vent and get a vented cap:doh:
7.bolts on the valve covers- no mo leaky.

Isn't there a free boost mod. Where you cap off the turbo nipple going to the wasgate then run the wasgate line to the bypass valve line its supposed to give u 10 to 11 lbs of boost. This was on the socalsupras.com site.
loosen the spring in the AFM in hopes of accomplishing more throttle response.

Well, just visit my site at http:www.JBLMk3.com and you'll find all my mods, which are almost ALL under $20.00 (I am always broke and always looking for cheaper ways to do things!). Everything from my PVC intercooler pipes, timing/error code switch, CAI mods, intercooler ice cage, intercooler fans, aux A/C fans override, lots of cooling mods and a LOT more! Check it out.

discovered a couple of things while doing BHG repair...
Cheap ($12@ebay) MKIV strut tower bars fit the MKIII...if installed propperly clear evrything.
Kinked the fuel line from the filter to the fuel rail. Removed entire piece, cut kinked section out, and replaced it with a piece of neoprene fuel line and a couple of small hose clamps.
Found from several reliable and semi-reliable sources that the only vacuum operated devices in car are (someone please correct me if this is wrong):
Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR)
Power Steering
Brake Booster (large vac. line)
Also removed the 'T' fitting leading from throttle body to the two valve covers at rear of car. I capped the throttle body port of and made a small catch can from 2" pipe and mounted it toward the rear of the head. No more oil and shit in my intake.
Made a steel top radiator pipe from a 2.5" (not mandrel, but will flow none the less) pice of pipe I happened to have laying around.
That's all I can think of right now. But I know I did some more free/cheap stuff. Oh yeah, another discovery...the LED lighted windshield washers can be had off ebay for $1 if you catch the right auction...but never over $5. They work well, easy to install, don't look that bad, and are much cheaper than new OEM replacements (that I've seen...but I got mine for .88 cents).

Isn't the BOV also controlled by vacuum? I think everything connected to the line which runs from the underside of the accordian hose, down the the power steering, then across the front and to various bits on the intake side is all under constant vacuum.

Heres the full explaination of the mod SOGI AUTO WINDOW UP (http://supras.com/sogidb/index.php?jumpto=techcenter&tech_jumpto=display_techtip&id=69) ...i didnt quite do all the stuff mentioned...i managed to cut the tab mentioned without removing the speaker grill..power window buttons etc.....much faster :)

yeah...your BOV needs vacuum as well...I have an N/A so it didn't cross my mind...thanks Da Kine Guy!
Also, all of the misc tid bits that are vacuum operated ARE under a constand vacumm...however...thos tid bits can be removed along with the corresponding vac line. After lots of research all of the vac operated devices (except those mentioned earlier as needing vacuum) are pieces of the EGR system. The EGR only reduces the amount of noxious gasses in your exhaust by recircuculating them through your intake. By recirculating them through your intake you're putting all of your intake assembly under an attack from nasty carbon substances...which don't effect performance but do dirty things up.

Here's what I did to replace my worn out looking fabric in the doors and backseat area panels, on my 87T. I am re-doing the same thing for my 1990TT.... I will document the process this time, and maybe even sell some templates of the automotive carpet (used in lower part of doors) and/or of the fabric in the panels. Costs way less than $20 and although the pics show a dirty car, looks AWESOME when it's clean.... I will do a tech-tip on it this time around tho....

I gotta say that my favorite free mods are Auto-Window Up, replacing the intake resonator with some pipe, and the SOGI short shift mod. The thing I love about Supra's, is that there are so many people coming up with all these cool things to do. My question, why don't they make all these goodie mods from the factory.

Hey guys.. I just stuck this thread it's very useful for newbies..
BTW I didn't read though all of it but the cheep mods i know of are... Fog rewire, sogi short shift, cold air, little filter breathers on where the PCV or BOV goes for extra air, afm adjustment for na, bumping timeing, exhaust dump (32$) for non electric, dash engine code rewire... Thats all i can think of right now.
MrBoost

Fog light rewire is cool too.
TEMS override is cheapest suspension mod.
Intake heat shield, Dryer Hose, Ducting Wrap, Aluminum Tape Refelector Treatment. $20
Train Whistle Exhaust, hell yeah! :P
$25 poly bushings into stock sway bars, gains 50% feel, ready soon. ;)
Hella Ghetto: Soda can PCV catch with rubber hoses. Not for me.
$20 shock-sensor upgrade to factory alarm.
A/C fans manual switch for better cool-down.
Do you guys know how excited we were to first discover the short-shift mod? It was big news. :)

Yea I was so excited when I heard about it. The shifter was the first thing I didn't like about my car. It's almost as long as the shifter in my friggin pickup. I know about the Foglight rewire, but is there a way to get them to blink with the turn signal?
Climate Control relocation, I know Ultra7M has it in his center console, and a bunch others do.
Changing the lights behind the Gauge Cluster and sottering different color LED's in your climate control(to match the color of your car?) Cheap but takes a lot of time. Can you say Bling
Painting the cluster cover, very easy and only a little can of paint is needed.

I've never heard that steering wheel trick, rip off old leather, I have a grey one that I need to work on, it's nasty.
The Turbo Timer in the ashtrey gap, is sharp looking. Washers on the wastegate is one of the best mods. My ebay intake was awsome, sounds great. Now I'm going to try to have some pvc to put the filter under the bumper.
DSM Fans are also a great mod, take away clutch fan. And the dsm's move so much fuckin air. Might be found at a junk yard.
Anyone have an answer for the nast ebrake boot?
adjuster
04-12-2003, 06:42 PM
Yep. stock ebrake boot from Jay Marks is under 20. (another under 20 is the shift boot, but they are more than 20 combined...) I just replaced mine, and they are perfect. (Just like stock because they are stock... LOL)
Best upgrades I think for less than 20.00 in order.
(Assuming you have a good flowing exhaust and DP) Shim (washers) the turbo WG. So easy, and it works great. (Just shim till you hit FC, then take out one shim. Easy and simple and about .50 cents.)
Conduit hard pipe upgrade. I swear with no other changes, and a shimmed WG, it gave me at least 2 psi more boost with the same amount of shims. (I figure those 2lbs were from restrictions in the stock plastic pipes the Conduit replaced. Here is a photo of Dave's that we did later on. You can use PVC like JBL does, but you have to press in metal pipe at the clamp spots, this mod is already metal pipe. Total cost is 7.00 and your time to cut and clean up the pipe. Painting is optional. The pipe is zinc coated already. Find them at Low's, Home Despot or any good electrical store. One 90 degree 2" sweep makes a new upper pipe from the apron to the 3000 pipe, and replaces the lower aluminum bend that is bolted to the right frame rail. (Cut your stock rubber hoses shorter, and it fits just fine. I just used 3 large zip ties to attach it to the existing old clamp location. So far, so good.)
Next in line is the air screw mod. With a good exhaust, shimmed WG and gauges to keep an eye on things, try backing out your air screw on the stock AFM. Holy crap, there is 14.5 psi waiting for you to discover on your STOCK AFM, not the Lexus one. Actually, I don't know where the FC is now, but it's over 14.5 psi that I'm running at the moment.
Next mod is going to be a custom set up air bypass, but that is over 20.00, so off this thread. :)
Fog lights, Tems jumper, Seat mods (if my labor was free) and likely stuff I can't remember. Just have fun with your Supra. :)
Well, I tried posting a pic, but can't seem to make it work. Ask Dave for a copy:)

How do you get the sawblades to get polished like that! Since I cant afford some 18's and lowprofiles right now, I wanted to just strip and polish the old blades. How is it done? They underneath part is already showing in some spots, so I might as well do that.
Did any one mention the electric fan mod? Just get some electric cooling fans to get rid of the stock fan. Its like 80-100 bucks for some though.

i took the leather of my burgandy 87 wheel, and it was black underneath. fyi
Im gonna do the side marker turn signal mod, that sounds sweet.
i've got the 86.5 wheel, blue leather... i took it off and it was black underneath with some code written like a white perm. marker... it says 721 and whenever i get in it i try to rub it off, but after 16 years you'd think it would be easier.... ha
about the sawblade rims, i spent about 15 bucks on spray paint and clear coat and coated my rims with that... i like it, but after a while i may try the polished look, seeing as though it may look better on my car anyhow.... heres my rims...

i dont think removing the leather is the best idea. WHat i did was get some black dye (made for shoes) and dye the steering wheel black. I did this on my maroon 87 steering wheel. It looked pretty good.
On my 89 steering wheel there was some slight yellow showing through on the to so i died that black. I wasnt super happy with it. I went to walmart and they had this $15 Black leather steeringwheel cover. Its not one of those gay ones you wrap on and tie either. It slips over, damn and it looks so good on there. I would reccomend getting one of these covers before stripping the leather.

how bout changing the soft stainless steel cam cover screws that strip out over to bolts???
I cant, for the life of me, Find the page where the guy talked about going to a fastner store to find the proper stainless steel bolts that dont cause electrolysis when mating to aluminum, etc... I want to know what bolts to get for my car...
Also, im going to figure out a remote location for the PS fluid resiviour...its ugly, leaky, and ugly...plus its ugly and i want to shuffle it into a corner where it wont be notices... like Milton Waddams.

Tear out Jute Padding from carpet: Free!

We should condense a whole list of these cheap/free mods and put them on a Visual Frequently Asked Questions page complete w/ pictures (hence, "Visual") and how-to instructions. Never though of this...it's pretty easy and effective.
Cheap gaskets
For your intake assembly and various other parts that use paper gaskets...especially good for block-off plates.
Trace the outline of what you're gasketing onto a piece of cardboard like cereal boxes are made from. That stuff makes great gaskets...just not ideal.

yeah but is a cereal box gasket reliable?
makenzie71
05-01-2003, 11:22 PM
actually yeah...if you do it right. I did almost all of the gaskets on my S4 RX7, including the water pump and housings, using a (coincidence?) lucky charms box. Worked for 2 years so far. All the block off plates on my Rexes and my Supe use a cereal box gasket, too.
Most gaskets aren't any more complicated than a pre-cut piece of cardboard anyway.
You just have to be sure to use some silicone gasket sealent and follow the directions propperly. Hell, on one of my RX7s the water pump housing only has the silicone sealent on it...just lay a 1/8" bead on the metal, set what ever gadget you're sealing on top of the bead without bolting it down and wait for about 5 minutes...then tighten it up.

Did any one mention the electric fan mod? Just get some electric cooling fans to get rid of the stock fan. Its like 80-100 bucks for some though.
I got a used free electric fan from a Chevy celeb. It is incredible in power gains. Engine feels amazin and smooth. I connected to the stock (small ) fan.

Toyofreak,
Took a few hours the first time to do the door panels. Most of those panels come out easily. On the 89+, it seems like the speaker grill is a bit more difficult (doors and rears). Actually, I did remember that I took pics along the way, for a future Tech-Tip. PM me and I will make sure and find the pics, and add instructions......and send to you. Don't care where it's posted/shared, just wanna make sure everyone gets to see 'em

Sorry, the uhm, Pedal covers are in the "Performance" Aisle. they are near the shift knobs and LED tail pipe tips. they have diff colored inserts to choose from and AT or MT sets to choose. They are made by Qwest or something liek that, they have 2 different brands. I would rather get the ones that have Screws attaching the inserts, not rivits. I would uncrew the inserts, that way there are Lugs protruding and give you better bite on your shoes, especially when they are wet.

How about sanding off the lettering on all of the lenses? (tail, side markers...) Looks a lot cleaner and it's free! I haven't figured out a perfect method yet... haven't tried with any high-grit sandpaper.
i did the mod of installing the new "green shift gasket" and the "white bushing" on the end of my shifter and now the stick doesn't wabble side to side in nuetral like it should. I tried lubing up the parts. didn't help. then i partially unscrewed one side of the holding bracket screws and that worked, up until i found my self blocking 2 lanes of traffic because my shift stick was in my lap. thats right, the screws loosened themselfes and as i downshifted to third around a turn, the whole stick assembly popped out. sucked... so now i sufficiently have the screws down, and it only wobbles back when i push it towards the passenger side. when i pull it towards the driver side, it sticks there. It never used to do this with my old nasty and corroded gasket. what should i do?

Assuming you have it assembled correctly now, then...
the shifter is sticking because the square metal plate that bolts to the transmission case, is worn out larger than the sliding disk attached to the shifter stick.
Probably sounds confusing, not sure how else to put it.
Anyway, unbolt the four screws that hold the square metal plate, and rotate it 180 degrees.
That should fix your sticking shifter. If not, let us know.
By the way, have a look at your sticking shifter, with the rubber boots pulled up, and it will be obvious why it's happening.
Cheers...Sdude.
i tried rotating it 180deg, when i first noticed the problem, which was when i first installed it. I even tried 90deg but the holes don't line up. When i took it off the screws were down pretty well so i tightened them similar to the previous tightness. I also sat, confused, trying to figure this one out. I tried lubing the assembly and that just made it feel gooey. I tried silicone grease, then realized my mistake, and tried motor oil, Then i wiped off the excess and reinstalled it. same problem. It does shift really well and its got a nice feel compared to my old broken and corroded gasket.

So you didn't see why it's hanging up?
The metal disk on the shifter stick, is catching on the opening inside the square piece that bolts to the tranny.
By using new bushings, it forces the metal disk upwards into the hole with more force, so it sticks.
You can try filing the edges, untill they are smooth so it won't hang up. Or if you have a welder handy, you can weld back the worn away material (on the square piece).
If you don't have a welder, and filing doesn't work (and getting a new/used shifter is out of the question), then you can put some thin plastic between the shifter stick, and the sliding disk.
That's how I cured my 450 000 km shifter, (with the piece of plastic), before I got my welder. The piece of plastic prevents the shifter from moving as far, as to allow the metal disk to get hung up within the hole.
PM me, if you need more clarification, let's not divert this sticky way off course. :)

i have a question, if you don't replace the green gasket and white bushing on the short shift mod, will it still be good to drive and better than the original long stock shifter, i have my dash off and already to do this mod but i dont have the replacement parts and probably wont order them (dont want to go through taking the dash all off when if i do get them....) but i always could i guess, but if i dont, i am woundering if i will notice anything not good, or wreck my shifter all together, thanks alot.

Taking the dash off, to get to the shifter?
Hope you mean just taking the stereo/shifter bezzel off, a 3 minute job maximum.
In my opinion the "hack job SOGI" short shift mod, is horrible. I got rid of it less than 20 minutes driving with it. Too much vibration/noise and it's too short for comfortable hand position on the shifter.
Too bad for most people, once you get that far, you ruined your shifter and cannot go back to stock.
The purpose of me stating this, is not to flame the mod. It is to warn people that they may not like it, and ruin a perfectly good shifter.
What I did, is I shortened the stick while keeping the rubber inulated part, and it is just like stock (from noise/vibration) but much shorter in height than stock.
I described how I did it, on this thread:
http://www.supraforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63688&highlight=shifter+stick
Anyway, get the bushings at your leisure, as you can replace them when you have spare 45 minutes to do the complete job.
Cheers...Sdude.

well i did this mod, and i apsolutly love it... it looked as if my current bushing is already ripped apart and falling to pieces, but i re-assembled everything and it shifts great, and it doesnt vibrate at all... it seems to be less loud and doesnt shake at all compared to how it use to be.... i am very pleased with this mod.. but it didnt go as short as i hoped... the shift boot falls down and i can see some of the metal rod under my 8 ball shift nob.

Mainly, the first things I did when I got my car was to fix a lot of the shit that wasn't looking good, or working good, and add some power back to the old beast.
First off, I refinished my sawblades. This took me all day. Stuck the car on jack stands, wetsanded the rims, then sprayed them with a couple coats of Autozones wheel paint, and then some clear coat. They dont look aftermarket, but they do look like the newest, cleanest set of sawblades out there! It only cost about 10 for the paint and sandpaper, and then end result is well worth the workout I got from sanding.
Then, I had to replace my valve cover gaskets to fix an oil leak. Here I killed a few birds with one stone. With half the intake manifold off, and the throttle body and everything off, I decided to fix some more shit. I wetsanded and painted the valve covers with a nice 2000 degree red paint (courtesy of Autozone again) and some clear coat. They look hot! Easy to do and well worth the time.
Then, I cleaned out the intake manifold, and throttle body with STP's intake and throttle body cleaner. It completely blasted every spec of oil and goo stuck in my intake and throttle body. This added a few horsepower and was very inexpensive.
To keep it clean for the future, I pulled out that pcv line from the covers to the throttle body and replaced it with two valve cover breathers (again from autozone) and they do look pretty sweet.
While I was down to the cams, I checked all my valve clearances for factory specs, and they all checked out. Now if they don't, then you can shim them back to specs for a couple cents. And this is well worth the time.
Once I stuck everything back together, I also took out the resonator and replaced it with a piece of 3 in exhaust pipe that I picked up from my favorite place, Autozone, for about 2 bucks. I shot it with a matching coat of 2000 degree paint. I might of gained 1/4 hp from this, but it looks sweet and sounds a lot better. While I was playing with my intake, I stuck a 3 in filter on there that I got from ebay for a couple bucks. This is good for a few ponies, and sounds tight.
I also lightened the spring in the afm, and right away I noticed a difference in throttle response. This is a FREE, easy mod to do.
I put the engine all back together and found it suprisingly quicker, especially at high rpm's, around 4500+.
Then today, I fixed the gas gauge problem by cleaning the sending unit, easy to do, and step by step instructions on SOGI, along with other mods that are free.
I also shimmed the hood and took out the weather strip for more cooling, and that really helps with under hood heat. I also fixed some random rattles here and there.
The mods were all relatively easy, as long as you know how to use a socket wrench, and each of them could be done under 20 dollars. Then there are more free mods on SOGI that you can do whenever you feel like it. Also, ebays got great deals. Dont forget that.
So now that the supra looks good under the hood, has a little more power, I'm going to do exhaust, from the headers on back, for some real power gains, and a great sound! Nothing beats the roar of a straight 6.
87supra
06-02-2004, 02:47 PM
got pics of the shimmed hood? ive been comtemplating this
i have my idle screw backed out. It raised the fc to about 13.5-14 with my current mods. i keep boost set to 12.5-13 so I don't spike and hit fc. It felt like i gained a lot of torque with only a few extra pounds i got out of it. well worth it with no bad side effects.
also that knock sensor rewire mod worked for me. Co-ax wires from the knock sensors to the ecu cleared the engine code.

i wouldn't bother with this mod
just buy a manual boost controller or shim the wastegate... they'd be the cheaper more boost mods i would recommend
what he's saying is true because the wastegate is meant to actuate at a time when the manifold pressure is at around 5-7psi. There's a sizable difference in pressure betweent he manifold and outlet of the turbo because you have an intercooler, a bunch of pipe, a TB, etc, etc.
So yeah, you fire the wastegate from the manifold pressure, get some more boost. Problems with that: long hose, boost creep.

I couldn't find this in this thread anywhere, didn't seem to be posted here, and it may be sorta common sense/common knowledge, but here it is anyway. Hope this helps someone, I searched for a long time on the best way to repaint my center caps, and found virtually no info on it, just on repainting the wheels.
If your center caps are looking kinda rough (like mine were on my MKIV wheels), you can sand them off lightly, and use some of the Krylon wheel paint from AutoZone, etc. to repaint them. Unless the color is really bad on your wheels, they'll come out a near perfect match, to all but the closest inspections. We put three coats on mine, they look like new now.

I thought this would have been said already, but if you have 5spd Sup you can change the old ass fluid that's probably never been changed with some Redline and swap out the shifter bushing for about 35 dollars. All you need is 3 qts of redline MTL (manual transmission lubricant, and about 10 dollars a qt) and depending on dealer (6 dollars in my case for a new shift bushing). IT'S SUPER SLICK SHIFTING!. MANUAL Tranny holds 2.7 qts? I was going to do a write up, but didn't have a camera at the time. This won't be the case with an AUTO tranny though, they have more fluid.
Another 20-25 dollars for Redline rear diff fluid 90w.
I think the resonator deletion mod, and "ghetto" ram air has been stated.
When I get the time, I will do a write up on the driving lots ala mark 2.

Chevydude, I definitely feel the love for this. I would normally consider this "basic maintenance" but the difference Redline MTL and the bushing swap makes on how the manual tranny shifts is a borderline mod. I had to break out the TSRM to check the capacities of oil since its been a while since I see it myself. Here it goes:
Manual Transmission oil capacity:
7M-GE (w58) 2.5 US quarts
7m-GTE (r154) 3.2 US quarts
Automatic Transmission oil capacity:
1.7 US quarts
Differential Oil:
1.4 US quarts
Seems the manual trannies hold more oil...I would have guessed otherwise also. I have also read on many threads that the best oil to use for the differential is Ford gear oil, everybody who's tried it says they love it. That would have to be my next "maintenance" mod.

I could have swore the Autos used a lot of fluid? I might be thinking of another vehicle. Shift bushing was very helpful, tightned up instead of really loose and sloppy. I would say the Redline is a mod. By using it you are deviating from the mfgtrs original specficiation. Heck, Websters says a mod is a limited change in something.

It's been a while since I see a post here, so here goes. I found this posted elsewhere and decided to post it here.
To clean up the engine bay, some guys remove the charcoal canister. Here is a good way of doing it:
Remove the charcoal canister and the bracket
Stick a bolt (M8 or M6 can`t remember) in the hose that should go to the canister, now it`s blocked off.
Doing this causes pressure to build in the tank, here's the workaround:
Take the gas cap and split it into two pieces.
Drill a hole in the lower part.
Pop it together.
Or just buy a 2way vented gas cap.
No more pressure in the tank.

I did the charcoal removal thing too, put it back on though because the gas vapors were very bad.
Also, just got some NGK Blues spark plug wires, and I must say I'm VERY satisfied with 59 dollars spent on them. Top notch plugs, excellent, fit and finsih. Well worth the money.

a follow up on the sogi afm mod. Its dog shit. Dont do it. You gain no hp, and actually lose some. All it does is make your engine dump in a ton of fuel... you run rich, and lose power. I noticed this during emissions time when my shit was through the roof, and they said that it could be due to running rich, so I turned it back to stock, and the numbers dropped a ton, and mpg went up.

Can you go past 10psi with the stock screws in the wastegate accuator? I was reading somewhere that you would need larger screws to go past ~10psi. Also, does anyone know of a write up that shows how to back out the afm screw?

If I remember correctly (god knows my memory is fried) I think you could hit about 12 psi. I actually prefer the "Home Depot" boost controller (which has worked great for a while) as compared to shimming the wastegate though, that way you can adjust your boost as you please. I just yanked mine for an old school Trust manual boost controller but now I have been fighting with fuel cut while trying to dial the mbc in right.

From what others have posted about it, it doesnt't sound like it is worth it. But if you are interested, it is posted on SOGI.

I had a manual boost controller set-up on my car,but it was causing a really bad vacuum leak. I've gone to hard upper pipes and Shimmed the WG,and the vacuum leak is gone. I can't seem to find the write-up on backing out the AFM screw. The only thing I found was something for N/A Supras.

Tweaking the AFM is meant for u to run rich.... because they figured if u were tweaking your car you would be sucking in mass amounts of air. The only way that mod would be useful is if you had upgraded air intake mods. All this info is coming from what Dean Marcum told me, who invented the mod... the coolant bypass supposedly works really well also, and wrapping the exhaust manifold in heat wrap (HIGH TEMP) will increase performance slightly also and reduce underhood heat greatly.

Octane booster, lucas motor oil stabilizer, fuel injector cleaner, and penzoil (because if you have a pretty nasty motor to begin with penzoil will make sure it breaks down so you can get a better engine (not recommended for people who already have a bad@ss motor)). And of course waxing your vehicle will lower your wind resistance.

Just go to home depot and buy some sheetmetal, then bend/drill it to fit over your filter. I was thinking of a setup to do this and duct more air into the snorkel hole besides just an air duct, and that's when I realized how much better/cheaper it would be just to route the intake to the exterior of the car, so that's what I did (Now in passenger foglight hole)

I searched through a bunch of strut bars and finally found that an FC3S FRONT strut bar will fit on our rears. All you need to do is enlarge two of the holes a little little bit and get four more strut mount spacers, two for each side. There should be a total of three spacers when your done. You also have to cut out the interior plastic the same way as for those cusco ones.

actually yeah...if you do it right.
OMG, that has to be the most getto mod ever.

Vent it where? If you vent it to the atmosphere you will get alot of stumbling and some stalling when not in boost(shifting, coming to a stop). Unless you have some other way of metering the air besides the stock afm such as Speed density or a GM MAF in blow through mode.

no, dont vent the stock BPV. it's designed to fluctuate between open and closed during normal engine operation. (idling) venting it will simply create intake leaks, etc... it's just stupid. you're decreasing the performance of your car, for a "cool" sound. venting the stock BPV is the dumbest thing ever. get a REAL, GOOD, BPV, or a REAL, GOOD, aftermarket BOV.

Want to get the cool warning feature of a $200 boost gauge but at a discounted crackhead price, read up and thank me later
I just added these to my car and they work great, all it takes is.....
- adjustable hobbs type pressure switch (around $10)
- LED or other light ($1)
- 16 gauge wire ($1)
- wiring skills of a 1st grader
- even add a buzzer if you are to stupid to see the light
easiest way to get the pressure switches is on ebay they have ones adjustable from 1-25psi and they wil even pre-set them for you.
pretty much the pressure switch has a basic circuit and when the amount of boost is reached it will flip the switch and turn on the LED light and sound the buzzer if you got one
works like a charm, I think this could go down as the BEST mod for under $20
this is only the beginning i am also wiring up warning lights for low fuel pressure and maybe even a low oil light that only comes on under boost

where can i get a vented gas cap??
Anthony1
03-26-2008, 11:14 AM
Vented gas cap is not a good idea. There's a pressure valve before the charcoal can. It's only released when it reach certain temp or pressure....I think.
I have a 95 4runner and I had the gas tank moved to the back of the truck for ground clearance. The guy got the return line and charcoal can line reversed, I was dumping gas after I drove about 1/2 hr on the frwy and the engine would cut out It would start but cut out as soon as I stepped on the gas.
Another reason, if you're in CA, you won't pass smog....legally.
AGlobalThreat
03-30-2008, 07:32 PM
Vented gas cap will work just fine if it has a 1 way valve inside
Correct about the smog though, you need all your emissions equipment to be in-tact and working to pass (That includes the charcoal canister).

Everybody hates the charcoal can but there's really no good way around it. Get a smaller, plastic one. Lots of cars have them just look around at a pick and pull. You won't gain hp by getting rid of it and if a clean bay is your goal the get a small one and tuck in under the fender.

that sucks... ive been looking at some aftermarket steering wheels but i dont want to lose my cruise control. i found one with dual horn buttons and was considering trying to wire the accel/resume to one and the coast/set to the other. i could find somewhere else for the horn and my brake pedal is good enough for a cancel button

Toyota actually has a cruise control adapter for it's momo wheels..
seen it once on the unmentionable site, I'll look for it and report back if I find a pic of it..

Anyone have anymore about rewiring the ac fans to a switch so that they'll come on manually? I am not good with electric things, though I am sure it's an easy job.

You could just run a manual switch into your interior, I'm actually doing this VERY soon, I'll do a little write up thread on how i did it. I'm also going to do the really small stock fan that blows on the alternator, while i'm at it.

For you old school Supra guys looking for cheap mods.
And I know this thread is old as fuck, just saying...
1. Changing your gauge cluster colors for 4$ (On Supramania with pics and a walkthru)
2. Using the stock "Headlight washer" as a IC sprayer.
3. Turning your headlight washers around to spray people in traffic
4. Painting the calipers
5. Polishing stuff under the hood
6. Push button style switch, for engine start
7. Electric fan instead of mechanical on Radiator
8. Cone filter upgrade
Just a few things I remember from having the old poopra.

- even add a buzzer if you are to stupid to see the light
easiest way to get the pressure switches is on ebay they have ones adjustable from 1-25psi and they wil even pre-set them for you.
pretty much the pressure switch has a basic circuit and when the amount of boost is reached it will flip the switch and turn on the LED light and sound the buzzer if you got one
works like a charm, I think this could go down as the BEST mod for under $20
this is only the beginning i am also wiring up warning lights for low fuel pressure and maybe even a low oil light that only comes on under boost
edit: pic of pressure sensor available at http://stores.ebay.com/Be-Cooling and http://stores.ebay.com/coolingmist

Did anyone else notice the water/alcohol injection kit of only 180$ Should i trust them?

I haven't read the whole thread, but a killswitch is just wire+one switch, maybe 6 bucks max.

Yup, I have kill switches on all 3 of my Supras, each cost maybe $3..
however since they're 5-speed, I didn't wire them into the starters, as they can just be push-started, I wired them a different way, so there's no possible way to get them running...
also, they're hidden in a different spot on each car, so if switch is found and the car is taken, it won't be so easy for the others..

with a small needle (like for sewing) stick it in the hole where the water shoots out and then you can aim the squirter. just like for the windsheild.

Shove the needle in the outlet and turn the nozzle? I'll go try...
There's some pressure behind these freaking nozzles, I'll tell ya
edit: that didn't work, they didn't even budge. They're already bent both towards the driver's side, so next step is to use some pliers and try not to break them. I'm not taking the nosepiece off...
2nd edit: Wiggled them back and forth with a pair of pliers (carefully) and the ball popped right out of the socket...rotated them around, tapped them carefully into place again. Adjusted once into place, as they moved a bit, then tapped in again (just to make sure).
Looks like two big claws of water shooting out

whats the difference between rewiring the relay versus rewiring the switch? for fog lights
RazoE
01-03-2010, 01:13 PM
The switch usually gets power only when the headlights are on, when you rewire the switch with the defroster, you can only turn them on with the accessories, however, you don't need the headlights on..
Now rewiring the relay means you don't need the headlights on AND you can turn them off when you open the door with the auto-off feature...
Now if you want to rewire your foglights the cheap way, hook them up directly to the batter and hook up an autozone toggle switch, however you'll probably drain the battery by forgetting to turn them off, and you won't be able to use the stock switch...

alright so your saying if i just do the switch to the defroster, the defroster has to be on in order to use them? lol
regardless.. rewiring the relay is pretty idiot proof.. :sadance: im on my way lol.
