    Rotary Supra build

    I have a 89 7M GE auto. I originally just wanted to do a manual trans swap but it's pretty hard to find a W58 ot R154 around where I live. So I've decided to go with a rotary swap instead of the usual uz jz ls swaps. I'm just not sure if I should go with a renesis REW or 20b

    how about swapping in a cummins....assuming were just swapping for the sake of swapping here, not factoring in cost/hp/time etc....

    when i think nice light high revving rotary i don't think of swapping in a car that is 1000lbs heavier than the donor car lol

    Well that was the idea do something outlandish and possibly insane and a cosmo it's all that much lighter

    where do you live that you can't find used toyota parts, but CAN find mazda rotaries ? This is what i am not understanding.

    Outlandish and insane would be the wrong words for this. Unpractical and disappointing would be better choices.

    Honestly though, do you even know what goes into making a rotary engine even remotely reliable much less powerful enough to make a 3400lb car remotely fun?

    The Renesis is an awful example of a rotary engine and is designed terribly. 40k miles on one and they're toast. 90% of the RX8s I see with over 50k will need a new engine. They cant keep compression for anything. Not to mention they're gutless to say the least. Rx chassis is considered a light and agile chassis as well and they are far from ballsy.

    I'm saying this from experience as I'm a certified Mazda technician, unless you have a very large amount of money and knowledge for a sophisticated rotary setup, id steer clear of them.

    20B is one of the most expensive motors out there. the cost of a 20B you can buy 2 2jzs,or 3 1jzs. Plus most 20Bs require rebuilds, so 4 grand for amotor that most certainly requires a rebuild = Ls or JZ

    A 20B is fucking expensive. Rotaries are best in small cars with small engine bays that enjoy low curb weights. Rotaries are best owned by people that like wrenching a lot more than driving.

    If you want outlandish and unexplored territory, that's as easy as looking at what engines came in such a huge variety of 90's-00's sedans and other cars & trucks.

    My favorite two 'outlandish' swaps into a MK3 so far have been a BMW V12 from a 750IL sedan, and a 6BT Cummins.

    I'd love to see someone do a 3UR-FE 5.7L Tundra V8 or a 1FZ-FE 4.5L from an FZJ80 Land Cruiser.

    This was done a while ago, 1FZ with a 98mm turbo in a mk4. And it's AWD

    Logically a rotary is a bad decision... But for the sake of being different. I think it is a badass idea. 3 or 4 rotor with some boost and you are good to go! Good luck with the build man.

    Late to the party, but I love driving a rotary. However, I'm not a huge fan of the sound, especially compared to some of the better sounding piston engines that are reasonably priced. Could a 20b make for a suitable engine for the Mk3? Sure, the Cosmo it came out of is a comparable car to the Mk3.

    That said, what do you want? Is it to go fast? Is it to be different? Is it the sound? The terrible fuel economy? The questionable reliability? What you want, is what you need to iron down before you commit to a build.

    I can say from experience that being different isn't always the best approach. I love my car, but if all I wanted was to go fast, a used C6 Z06 would have been my absolute best option. If you want to make a Mk3 fast for reasonable money, it's hard to beat an LS swap. Certainly compared to a rotary swap anyway...

    Either way, your car man, save up your money, and when you have a very healthy budget, do what feels right for you.

    I know it's been done by a few before, but I would love to see this swap happening more often. I can only imagine how torquey these bastards are..

    I'm guessing the issue is the shortage of blocks in this part of the world?

    Good alternative that would be readily available, at least in the US, would be the Atlas 4.5L from the Trailblazer. Even in NA form, it's pretty healthy if you let it breathe. Plus they're cheap as dirt in most cases.

    I've been working long frigging hours, and haven't signed in until today.

    First thought was why swap out to an engine with even less life expectancy of a 7M ?

    But it's a mute point now anyway.
    Glad that the OP realized his own limitations.
    These are not skate boards, and swapping anything more than tires, oil, or a battery takes a whole new level of skill.
    Most people that do successful swaps, don't jump on a forum first to ask how. They just do it.

    Personally, I like the 1FZ/2FZ turbo swaps, or go really old school, and do a killer 22r turbo, with 30psi boost.

    So yes the rotary build was scarped but i did not sell the supra. I'm keeping the 7m and try to figure out if I can make the collins jz adpter kit to work and have a drive shaft made. The end goal is now to do a 1/3 uzTT but after i get some money and track that time under my belt.
