Why? There are plenty of Miatas and NSXs out there w/o it. The only time you should really "need" it is in a parking lot.

I don't think this is the correct thread for this discussion. Why not start another one?

Disconnect it and find out. Sorry quick, I just had to reply. I'll stay off this topic on this thread from now on.

Whats up guys i live in the great state of NJ haha, and I have always loved driving my supra through turns rather then full on acceleratiing, most liekly due to the fact that my car is n/a. But I have always wanted to pus hthe limts at my local track, but thats the main problem i dont think there any local tracks. Anyone in NJ know of any local road racing tracks? Also my car has basic ebiach lowering springs, and koni adjustible shocks, with TT brakes calipers, Brembro rotors, and trd stainless steel brake lines, as well as tt sway bars. Is that a good start or would i do fine just going out my first few times? I would really like to get heavily into it, and the fact my cars becoming Twin turbo soon, is also a plus in the power department

No worries Mr. Natural. I just think that it'd be a great thread for discussion outside of this one...

Matt -- I think you have a great start... Why not start a "road racing the MkIII" thread... then we can sticky it.

Allways do back up mods (radiator, oil cooler, roll cage, proper fluids, ect..) befor you get into the performance aspect (coilovers, tires, engine mods, et.....)

    Matt,
Besides me and sometimes one or two other Supras from PA, there are also a few other NJ Supras that come out mostly to Pocono, and occasionally Watkins Glen NY, Summit Point WV, Limerock CT etc. for events run by PDA, NASA, SCCA, and owners' clubs like Porsche, Viper, Audi, BMW and others. There are groups that run events that I don't have links for, some are below. Most are off until Spring time, but try to make it out next season ...guaranteed you'll have a huge blast of fun.

Most of these sites don't have next seasons schedule up yet, but check back before Springtime; some of these have links to other events too, look around the sites and their associated forums if they have one:

Hey Matt, see under my screen name "Age: 56" ...well divide that by about 58 and that would give you my Internet Compatibility Coefficient ...j/k what I'm saying is I don't do any of that aim stuff and I don't plan to start now. But if you have anything you'd like to discuss, ask, etc, please just PM me here and I'll be happy to communicate with you.

It would be great to have another Supra out there. While I've seen a few MkIV's over the years, I've never seen a MkIII out on the track ....I assume that's what you have since it looks like one in your little sig pic.

I'm hoping a few other local Supras with some interest in road course type track driving might even show up next year for a little meet and show of Supra strength.

oh sure, I remember meeting you, Matt. Well whether you get turbos on it or not, plan to come out to one of these and you'll have a blast I'm sure. The programs run by the groups like PDA and NASA are tailored to help beginners learn. So even if you've never done it before, it will still be lots of fun, safe and educational. Once you get the hang of the basics after the first time, most people decide to go out on their own in an intermediate group, where you can still have an instructor ride along with you and give you pointers if you want.

That Hooters meet was cool, not only nice cars, but I learned that the Hooters girls are so nice that when I dropped my two boys and their friend off in there, the girls looked after them and I could have come back a few hours later when the meet was done and they would have had expert good lookin baby sitting the whole time. Plus the boys like the sports TV stuff. All for the price of some sandwiches and a good tip Next time my wife and I want to go out for the evening, I'm dropping the boys off at Hooters.

hey im always up for a good road course event...ive been wanting to take my supra on the trak so bad..im not into drag racing...im usually out on back roads tearin it up....but those areas are getting much more populated now so there is more traffic lately...and the cops are starting to crack down...hehe prob because of me ..and last night i paid my price from the police....

and that njmotorsportspark website has alot of info on it...i read it a few times and it seems they are going to start building in 2006 and start doing it in phases...if that opens ill be there everyday....

also when they have these track days and drivers schools..what do they include..do you just go there with a helmet and get your car inspected and your off to drive around the track at your own pace or what???
also i hear about drivers school's sometimes you use your own car with the instructor and i hear alot that they tend to have no mercey on your car since its not thiers...i just really dont want anyone driving my car for me...i just wanna learn the limits of my car myself like i have with every other car ive owned...

hey Ant, at the driver's school track day events I've been to, you NEVER have to let anybody else drive your car. If you ask, they will ride shotgun with you driving and give you advise and constructive criticism. The beginner group starts with a classroom review of the rules and terminology, meaning of flags, the "line", then the group goes out playing follow the leader with an instructor in the lead car followed by a line of beginners; the first guy behind the instructor follows as fast as he can on the line the instructor is drving; then that beginner drops to the side and falls to the rear of the group and the second guy comes up to do the same thing; that goes on until everybody has a chance. Later in the day you can go out without the instructor and just drive around to practice and compete a little with other beginners.

Just show up with your car in normal safe condition, belts working, good tires, have a helmet or they usually have a couple to rent, their inspection is making sure nothing is loose or unsafe or leaking; then off you go.

The next time you go, unless you are still unsure of what to do, you can probably step up to one of the intermediate groups. Passing is only allowed on straights and if the guy you are ready to pass "points" to let you by.

In addition to what Nick said, some of the track events I go to have a novice group where EVERYONE gets their own instructor. That was the way it has been at the last couple of Texas (TX2K4, TX2K5) events and a couple others I've been to, including Barber in Birmingham.
Having an instructor ride with you is the best thing that you can do the first few times at a track!!

Here is a couple clips of me at VIR this past weekend.

One is me chasing around a Viper ACR. The other is a little taste of what can happen when things go wrong.

Hey man -- glad you were ok. Looks like that hill upset the car balance a fair bit.

I'm going to start a sticky for Supra in-car track vids. Please feel free to post up those links there as well.

Nice vids! What kind of tires are you running? In the 4x4 vid, did you determine the cause? Almost looked like you went over something slipperly... could have just been the turbo kicking in... glad u and your car are ok

    Quick

That sounds good. I'll have lots of vids from this summer.

I'm running BFG KD's. I think what happened is it got loose going up the hill I caught it thought I had traction back but didn't and when I went to put more power down, traction wasn't there. It just came out from under me. It happened so fast I didn't have a chance to save it.

    Matt,
I'm almost positive I'll be at Pocono on Saturday May6, they're running the "tight and technical" East Course that day, and I like that track setup. I haven't registered yet since I'll be in Houston most of that week and I have to be sure I'll be home in time to go. If I ...or you... don't make that one, I'm positive there will be a few more Pocono events I'll make for sure later in the year so I'll let you know. My buddy 2MCHPWR will be at the May6 event too with his FD/LS1, it will be quite challenging trying to hang with him in that car with the better power to weight etc. and I seriously doubt my single setup will be done by then so I may very likely still be basic BPU.

Nice vids and driving. No matter how many times I watch, I really can't get enough and definitely like watching Supras blast around road courses.

Plus I like your steering wheel

That Viper seemed to be getting a little nervous. Funny they often seem to get that way, at least from what I've noticed. Another recent one posted here like that was when Nils in his Evo was following that one being driven quite fast but not great lines. For me last year at a Pocono SCCA event I was blasting down the front straight about 150+ and braking hard coming into the first turn which was also pit out and just then a Viper pulls out of the pits; this was not a street Viper at all, it was full race prepped, looked even more hardcore than say a Competition Coupe; anyway, I slow down to a crawl behind him since we weren't allowed to pass in the next couple tight turns and I figure his tires are still cold, a few seconds later he does a complete 360 right in front of me and is in the dirt, I couldn't even see a reason for it, it was like magic.

In Quick's new road course vids sticky, I'll see if I can post some of my own attempts at off roading my Supra

I think most important of all is that your car is as mechanically safe and sound as possible. That means all fluids are fresh and topped up, all bolts esp wheels, susp. and brakes are tightened to spec, and the wheels are aligned to at the very least OE specs.

Previously I used to track my Evo quite a lot (12-15 times a year). Forced me to put it up on the lifter every weekend and check the suspension and chassis. Car ran really great back then, not a single trouble.

I switched to nitrogen for filling up the tires, noticed a decent improvement in tire wear management too.

Oh yeah, a helmet and proper driving gloves help a lot too esp if you get sweaty palms like I do
