This thread is "turboing the 5MGE", not "How do I swap in a 7MGTE".

Turboing the 5m isn't easy or average work.

A basic setup would consist of....

    1. Oil and coolant lines (Rabidchimp.com)
    2. CT26
    3. 7mgte manifold
    4. Fuel pump
    5. gte injectors
    6. RRFPR
    7. Upgraded clutch
    8. Retarded timing
    9. Upgraded headgasket
    10. Turbo piping and intercooler if you decide to go that route

That's just the basics that you will easily find by searching. There is a lot more to it, just search and find.

Car will not crank with gte injectors.Fmu is cheapest option and works great. You'll need to 12v mod your fuel pump or use a mk3,walbro etc. Most of the mk3 piping will work. There is a cheaper route on the lines any shop that produces hydraulic lines can make them.I would tee off the sender, sunpro makes a metric kit. Then just find a 85 or later 5m oil pan and use the tap that's already there.Important!get a wideband or egt gauge, these can be expenssive but are well worth and will save you large amounts of money in the long run.Exhaust you can trak down a rabid chimp or get one made.Use the stock elbow and cut off the flange from the flex pipe and weld a pipe to it.I could go on about variations of this setup but this is the most basic cheapest way to turbo a 5m.

I was debating going turbo on my 1982 5mgte 103k miles. Will it hold up with just new pistons or is it better to build up the bottom end?Anyone got track times? Anyone got a rabid chimp kit?

I have personally ran 15psi with an fmu and a 60-1 on a fresh bottom.I don't know how much it was making but it felt strong. It went through two rear ends and a w58 that way. This is the trick to this.Don't run alot of compression if your going run a lot of boost.I had 9.2 motors survive 6-8 for as log as I wanted but as soon as I would try to go over 10psi it would detonate.I found a early 83 5m-ge and even with the smaller rods it survived. The key is compression, the later 8.5 motor would prob. work great but the 5m/6m head just dosn't work well with alot of compression and boost.

I just bought a mk2 supra a couple months ago and im already thinking of a swap. Ive seen 2jz, 1jz, and 7m swaps. I already know that the 2jz swap requires alot of custom fabrication and is a pain in the ass but its well worth it in the end. What i dont know is if the 1jz will be the same way. Does anybody know if the 1jz and 7m engines are a direct fit in the mk2 or does it require custom fabrication? and also what kind of modifications do the wiring harnesses require if they need any?

once you have the parts it only takes a few hours to install them all. when we did erics it took us maybe 4hrs tops and that included pulling the oil pan off in car and having the 10an fitting brazed onto the pan and then reinstalling it. also included making the i/c mounting brackets etc... and btw, you cannot use 7mgte injectors unless you are on a standalone. and a msd btm is not needed if you run premium gas and 10psi or less on stock turbo at 10deg btdc. eric never did and never had issues.

7m is direct fit, 1jz requires the same fabrication as the 2jz as the mounting points on the blocks are the same etc...

If you want to turbo charge your 5M for cheap,i think the best thing to do would get an intake and exhaust manifold of the 7M-GTE, and buy the remanufactured CT-26 Turbo, ovbiously there is more parts you'll need but id say thats a good start
