Very very nice, guys...this kit will be in my near future, for sure. What are the chances of working on a 6L90E swap?

I do my best to amuse!
Not to push Larry's buttons, but it really does and it makes the car a complete sleeper (as much as a Supra can be). It's funny seeing the reaction of people when they look inside my car. They see the a pillar gauges and get all excited. Then they'll lean in and see the auto console sitting there. You can feel the disappointment resonating off their faces as they say, "oh, it's an auto". hah, right buddy, that means I must be slow.![]()
I was poking fun with the fiance the other day and brought up the idea of me spending 8k for an AUTO.. she FLIPPED. haha, I think it will be a few years till I would be able to do this any ways...
Can you update the original post with pics? I'll be very interested in this once my current trans lets go...
Didnt read through the entire thread, but skimmed it.. looking for a few questions to be answered, if they were already answered I apologize..
Who has this trans in their car? I assume from what I've read that this is completely streetable? As in I could daily drive it to work in traffic (not that I would)? Whats the most mileage someone has driven on this trans in a supra so far with what mods (ie how long will it last)? Whats a rebuild cost?
I'm not too familiar with the 4l80e trans, but I know its what a lot of high-hp domestics use
You can find pics of the SP 4L80E kit tranny and an install in progress done outside of SP at http://www.supraforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=498270
How many have done this swap , yet?
Would like to know how hard the swap is for do it yourselfers
and how the cars are running at the track and in all day driving...
I'll throw up a summary here so no one has to go through the thread. I've had SP's 4l80e in my car now since they started doing the swaps. I'm running a bb71gts with the transmission and as a dd, it works out great. Larry has set up the shifting using the aem. The only complaint I could possibly muster up with the aem/4l80e combo is that the converter lock up is a bit annoying when driving around the speed it is set to lock up at. At the strip, I spool the turbo with some nitrous and keep the transmission out of overdrive, it's flawless. There are 2 "major" weaknesses with the 4l80e (that I'm aware of); the overrun clutch and the pump. The transmission was never designed for high rpm use. Now, I have my shift points set around 7600 rpm, and after many runs at the track and pulls on the highway, I've had 0 problems when making certain the car is not in overdrive (from what i understand, this disengages the overrun clutch). The pump is something that a few of the top transmission builders are improving, last I heard they weren't there yet. Still, the chance of a pump failure is not that high. I will continue to run this setup confidently and am looking forward to breaking into the 9's this year with a little higher shot off the line. Sorry, but I have no input for the DIY'ers that want to install the tranny yourself.
X2. I also am one of the first guys to have this tranny.Ive run 9.80s with a lot more left in it.I was driving the car every day to work all summer. No problems.Larry set the tranny with the pro efi and it shifts great!I love being able to drive on the highway with the overdrive and not have to worry about blowing it up at the track.

There is a actually a DIY'er thread posted by breakemloose who installed a 4L80E recently. Last I heard he still has some issues to sort out. He went with the 4L80E's stock bellhousing which took a little bit of beating on the tranny tunnel to fit. Advantage is that you can run many available torque converters.
Wow, don't know how I missed this new product announced at SEMA 2008. A 6-speed 4L80E by TCI with the extra 2 gears within the stock tranny casing.

I'd take the stock GM 6L80E
I'd take a trip to the moon too if it was available. Based on my reading, the 6L80E is a clutch to clutch transmission, not a step gear free-wheeler like a 4L80E, and reportedly far more difficult to setup. There is no aftermarket transmission controller that can handle it currently and the setup would be vehicle specific.
A rep from TCI was talking about it a bit in this thread on ls1tech:
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/automa...ed-auto-2.html
"To get the 2 extra gears you need to make mods to the valve body and electronics to apply OD in 2nd & 4th gear. As far as the Allison, it won't fit into a street rod type application as easy as the 4L80E and the 4L80E is by far a stronger piece."
So anyone going to go for the TCI six speed with the breakemlose DIY option?
Well, I've got my build going on now, just replaced the front and rear mains this week; I got the car with 143k miles on it, (still has 143k miles on it 9 mos later) Anyway, even just running the car at the stock fuel system limits, with the new PHR kit, I'm going to need to make a decision on which way to go soon (read: after tranny melts) A six speed paddle shifted auto just sounds great...
I'm not sure if the "Break'em Loose" DIY method is the thing to do tho.
If I remember correctly his method was to use the GM bell housing (adapter plate) on the 4L80 and just pound out the trans tunnel a little (air hammer). He did this so he could use a more readily available TC rather then a custom built.
PM breakemloose and ask. or maybe he will pipe up in this thread. I know I would be interested.
