Here's mine.. not the greatest picture but eh well. Hand sanded the original rubber coating off with fine steel wool then dipped in alcohol to clean. Sprayed with valspar flat black then a few coats of clear primer over that. Gave the surface a brilliant, yet tough easy to clean finish.

I got done doing my panels yesterday and am going to put them back in today. Ill post up some pictures tonight. I also figured out a good method which allowed me to not have to sand anything that I will share with everyone.
1993 6spd 6766 E85 - Boom!
1000whp build coming soon.
The easiest way I found to strip the OEM rubber paint was to spray some Goof Off on a dish rag and proceed to rub off the OEM paint. I rubbed all the panels in very small sections until the shiny plastic started to show. By doing this, I eliminated the need for me to sand down the plastic as others have needed to do to get a smooth finish before painting. It also eliminated any way for me to melt the plastic by accident because of the small controlled amount of Goof Off I would spray on the rag. Took a long time (about 5 hours) to get all the panels down to just plastic but it was well worth the time.
I used another big bottle of Goof Off that's not shown. Instead of using plastic primer paint, I used Dupi-Color Bumper Coating paint. The RX7 guys swear by this paint for their dash panels. You can buy it at any automotive parts places. I used two bottles. I also used a tooth brush to get into the little cracks to remove the rubber paint. That was very helpful.
I did about 5 to 6 coats of paint and let them dry overnight. Once the paint is completely dry it is very hard and I cannot scratch it with my fingernail. What I also love about this paint is that it is not to glossy and not to flat. Its just right
All in all, it was well worth the time and effort. Makes my interior look 10000x better! Now I'm going to go help my buddy do his on his Rx7... I guess I was the guinea pig =D
That's pretty slick, I gotta try that bumper coating paint next time.
shiftsk8r, great fucking job my friend!
did mine this weekend, but i only did 3 pieces and they all came out great.
the shift console, ash tray and the left door panel where the switch's are at.
camara battery died right after i took this picture so i will have to take some more later. But for the most part, it works and made my panels look like new. Im glad i read this thread.
Man,
I'm glad so many people have made good use of my thread... It's amazingly simple to do, and sure makes the panels look nice.
I'm glad that you tried this out because we would have had to pay for new panels again and have same result over time again. This is certainly a cheap fix but does require time and patience but it is well worth the result in the end.
Thanks again.

NEW OEM for the win.
Is it true all the 98 panels are discontinues now?

is there a paint to mimic the 97-98 dash console pieces color?
Here is my set of re-done '93-'95 panels:
To bad all of these were lost by FedEX

I had a company run a match for me. I sent in a new '97-'98 panel and they did the color and texture match up. It is VERY close to stock. The only problem was that they scratched as easily as the '97-'98s. I sent everything back in via FedEx to have them fix that (last step of the job) and FedEx lost everything....
Here is the side by side:

I fucked up with the valspar and ended up with zebra stripes but then just gave it a few coats of that duplicolor bumper coating and they turned out really nice. 2 things though with the duplicolor: 1) its actually darker than the stock color and the vinyl dash. it takes a while to get used to but if you're not looking for a perfect oem replica it looks excellent. 2) It shows fingerprints very easily in bright light. probably no one will notice, but knowing the perfection supra owners strive for with their cars it will drive you nuts. In light of this I have just learned to be careful not to touch the dash when reaching for the audio/ac buttons
