Cig Lighter - How-to photos

I know I've seen a number of people asking how to get the damn cig lighter out without tearing it up, so I figured while I had it all apart I might as well take some pics of it all broken down. These photos show all the parts of the cig lighter, and how they all fit together correctly. Chances are if someone has tried to take it apart and didn't do it properly, you'll have some of the pieces cracked or otherwise jacked up, so just order some new pieces from Toyota; they aren't that much.

Thanks!! I've taken 2 of these apart, but have not successfully been able to put them back on. Left the pieces sitting too long and then couldn't figure out what went where. No smoking in the Supras, but needed for GPS, or other accessories.

Yep, same here. Just be careful when you pull your accessory plug out, be extra gentle because even brand new the lighter components don't snap together super well, and can yank out fairly easily.

Its late and I'm brain dead but fill me in on why we would want to take it out and break it down into 10 pieces?

Just bypass the thermo fuse by removing the transparent dielectric between the 2 layer then put the small nut and bolt back

Just saw this and I know for sure that you DO NOT need to break it down to 10 pieces to remove it.

I just removed one from a dash set the other day to repaint it. I think i had it down to 3 pieces and it was out. The two pieces in the second picture and the actual cig lighter part.

I do not know what to look for if it breaks though. Havent had to worry about it, nor do I use the cig. lighter enough to find out.

I had to replace this thing twice.. now.. fuses are all good.. cig ring light is on.. but lighter does not work WTF?\

What's the wire colors for your lighter? Somehow I push mine in and the odometer goes dark. When I pull it back out, the odomoter comes back on. I know that's a wiriing issue, just wanted to see if anyone knew the positive and negative colors off the top of their heads. Thanks.

My cig lighter was having intermittent power outages while there was no signs of fuse blown. saw this thread and took apart the dash. sure enough the black wire fuse on the back of the cig lighter was barely touching the metal pieces... and my voltmeter did not see continuity. I just soldered the end of the wire fuse and its working perfectly again.

Hmm, I know I have one set of wires thats not connected. I'm kinda sure it used to go to the stock clock that used to be in the dash?

If you have used a converter or something that draws alot of power. Chances are that its the "L" shaped wire with the insulator on it is melted, and in two pieces instead of one. I carefully pryed the old one out using a pick and plyers. I replaced it with a paper clip that I bent in that "L" shape. Probably took me 30 minutes from start to finish. Now I can charge my navagation again!
