I have heard awesome stuff about DW....

Damn this is a tough choice, I might go with the 450 because I love learning new stuff and tinkering.... Will probably go with the hobbyking hk450gt, heard nothing but good about it and its cheap. 95% compatible with the trex 450 se v2.

Well, I just took the plunge on a rex 450 se v2 clone... With everything to make it rx ready (also have a dx6i on order) it came out to $140 shipped.

This is the one I bought.

Very cool! Please keep us updated on how it goes. I'm looking for a heli for my friend right now because he wants to come flying too. This looks like the route I may go. He has about 300-400 to spend, so this might keep him in budget

What equipment did you get? ie servos, receiver, motor, etc...

I have not bought a receiver for my dx6i yet, but I will probably buy a ar6200 or something of the sort. If he needs a transmitter check out the turnigy 9x on hobbyking.com, its cheap and suppose to be a good radio.
Here is a list of what I all bought.
    Airframe
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...dProduct=10811
    Motor
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=6262
    Gyro
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...dProduct=10113
    Pinions
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=8574
A couple pairs of these blades
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=8391
    Esc
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=9299
    A lipo
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=8934
    And 5 of these
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...?idProduct=662

I am going to use one on the tail for now to see how it does, its suppose to hold okay for sport flying and light 3d. If you want a more solid tail servo from the get go for a bit cheaper get one of these.

    http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...068sec_/_10.9g

It came to $142 ems shipped to Canada, all I have to do is build and add my tx/rx.

Here is the 9x transmitter and reciever
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=8992

Extra receivers are only $9 each.

Guess I need to step up the work on my Wing Dragon 4 FPV conversion... my Trojan suffered a hard crash today due to a jackass n00b turning on his radio on my channel right after I took off

Luckily I was flying with a keychain camera and not $400 worth of FPV equipment. Tore the whole nose off the plane on impact

Ouch, that sucks big time... Is it the parkzone t-28? I just sold mine.... One thing for sure, this hobby is NOT for profit.... I paid $270 to my door and sold it for $140 shipped, shipping was $40, and I only used it less than 20 times and never crashed... Many this hobby is rough.

Yeah, it was a PZ. A friend and I were taking off to do some formation flying and PFFT. Oh well, at least it's repairable as far as I can tell... haven't looked too closely at the damage yet.

quadracer - That's a pretty nice setup you have there for a clone for the price! I think this might be the route I direct my friend in. When you get it up and flying please let me know how it works, and what you think of it. If it's a quality setup for an intermediate flyer, that might be just right. TIA!

As for turning a profit in this hobby, you are right 100%. The only way around it is to buy used. That's what I've done and it comforts me to know I can turn around and sell it for the same amount I bought it for. Finding good used birds is tough, though.

^^ true that. I pay $700 for a traxxas revo at my local hobby shop and a year later I sell it complete minus engine (which is only $100 for a new one) with a bump box for only $150, its nuts.

The only issue I see with my clone setup is the tail servo, eventually I am going to want to upgrade. But until I start doing rolls and loops I should be fine for forward flight, ect. Its going to be my first 450 build, however I should be able to figure it out, there are some great videos on youtube on building.

The clone should fly just as good as a real trex, I dont see why not.... I think everything is interchangeable minus a couple things.

Next thing I have to build is a profile foamie

I agree with you 100%. The gyro will be interesting to see. It's the one part of the heli I've repeatedly heard is worth forking over for. Although hobbyking claims their 401 gyro is completely the same as the futaba gy401. Let me know what you think. If that truly is the case, that's a steal! And as for the tail servo, yeah you'll want a nicer one when you get up and going, but I see no reason to worry about the cheapo one until you've had a few wrecks and got up into some real maneuvers.

I think it should too. It is identical in most ways. And if you get it and love it, I'm definitely going to recommend this for my friend

There's a thread over on RC Groups that has me thinking....

    http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1171999

    Fastest Foam Plane Challenge

I don't think I can top the current record, but I can definitely get on the current leaderboard (only two slots are taken out of 10).

I think I'm going to build at least two planes, one flying wing and one F5D-style plane of my own design (which I've already finished in my head, just gotta put it together IRL ).

I'm guessing the wing will hit 75mph and the pylon plane 80mph. Once I change to hotter motors though...... hehehe

145 mph is nuts! Especially for one of the first two attempting to get that high. Awesome. Good luck monkey

White-tt, have your friend check out the HK-450 PRO clone or the Xheli 450 Pro clone. Both are solid performers and run about $70. I'd just recommend the belt-drive tail versions over torque tube. They're less susceptible to damage. If he's on a tight budget, I've also heard good things about the Turnigy 9x version 2 transmitter/receiver combo which can be had for like $60. I too sprung for a good gyro/tail servo combo and got a hi-tec setup. If I was too do it over again, I'd get a spartan gyro as they are known to perform flawlessly on larger heli's as well like 500 and 600's. Big savings can be had on batteries as well. I run the zippy flightmax 25'c lipos and bought 6 of them at around $13 each. Haven't had a single issue with one and charge them at 4 amps if I recall correctly.

A friend of mine got me into the RC heli's a while ago . Since then my daughter and I have been having a lot of fun learning how to fly ,and how to fix it after you crash . The cost is not bad and it's a fUn hobby with a steep learning curve,,,, much more appealing than stamp collecting lol. The Falcon and the honeybee have taken a beating . We both still crash too much so my buddies 450 isn't getting a lot of air time yet . As a newb i'm finding the 180Q a joy to fly compared to the others.

My dx6i arrived Thursday, damn is this thing is SWEET.
My 450 clone should be here monday... I also ordered one of these to build... Should be here right around time time im getting my tonsils yanked so I should have something to do while sick
I also ordered a fake spektrum ar6100e to try out on the foamy, I hear mixed things about them, it was only $17 shipped, and the foamy is close range so it should do, I wouldnt use them in anything else though... Also have a new ar6110e on the way (a real one) for the heli.

bayard - That is a SWEET drift car! Good work! If you don't mind me asking, how much did that setup cost you? I wouldn't mind building an electric drift car to play with on windy days.

quadracer - Yeah the dx6i is a great controller. I LOVE my dx7. It's a great transmitter, and so easy/quick to program. I don't have much experience with anything else, but honestly, the dx7 does everything i could ever ask, and is really easy to use/program on the fly.

Thanks! the car's looking good on the track with the LED kit i placed. The whole unit after all the parts, paint, mechanics, radio cost around 800 bucks. yeah expensive hobby but I went for the dont need to upgrade part by part route and just went for the best you can get parts. I would imagine if you want basics you can get everything for around 400-500 bucks. It was quite enjoyable to build it up and also to drift it finally. I need lotsa practice!

this video just inspired me to learn.

Bayard that drift car is looking sweet!!
You running lipos? If you are go to hobbyking.com and buy some zippy flightmax or turnigy's. Very cheap and I have had awesome luck with them, only bad thing is if you get a DOA you have to send it back (which almost costs as much as a new lipo), so you kind of SOL that way. But I have 8 and all are good. You running 2s or 3s?
    Heres a great 2s.. http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...dProduct=11613

Going to pick up my 450 heli from the post office in 20 minutes.... Man I feel like a 6 year old kid with ADD and ADHD on christmas.
