Lemme know what you think of Game of Thrones. Heard good things but I'm hesitant to pick up another series.
Got about 100 pages left of the fourth in the Ender's Game saga here![]()

Just finished Supreme Power: FDR vs Supreme Court. Good book which confirmed lots of things about FDR I already suspected.
Reading now:
The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence by Ray Kurzweil
Yeah it's a really great novel. If you can read a few of Larry Bond's (co-author of Red Storm Rising) novels, especially Red Phoenix. It's like Red Storm Rising except this time it's limited to the Korean Peninsula in the late 80's.
I'm about to start reading David Weber's How Firm a Foundation, the fifth novel in his Safehold Series. Picked it up from Barnes & Nobles for 50% off. Mint condition hardcover too!
Also I'm reading it for school (my teacher is using it as the textbook for my history class), but I HIGHLY recommend Howard Zinns A People's History of The United States. Really interesting book without a doubt, has changed my views of a few past events so far.

Read the first two in about 8 hours two years ago. Need to read the third. They're surprisingly good.
Just read all 3 over the past 3 days. Amazing books for entertainment purposes. Good break from David hume

I've read a lot of books in the last month. One of Richard Feynman's autobiographies, Ringworld, Age of Misrule (book one), and.... crap, I can't remember the rest but there were several others
Still haven't gotten started on Game of Thrones.
Just finished "In the Plex" - which is all about Google. It was not a comforting read...
Finally finished Atlas Shrugged. Also read A Wizard of Earthsea and others. Made it halfway through Eyes of the Dragon before going to sleep yesterday... hard to put it down, and I usually don't like Stephen King.
Just read through this thread for the first time. Enders Game is one of my all time favorites and the series as a whole is great, although some of the later books car drag on a little. I was really suprised that no one has mentioned a couple of my other favorites yet.
The Mistborn Trilogy - Brandon Sanderson - He is the guy that was selected to finish the wheel of time series. Would totally recommend to anyone who liked Enders Game
The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss - One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. Super descriptive and reads like you're watching a movie
Im am on the 5th book of the Song of Ice and Fire and I have really liked it so far. A feast for Crows was kind of a drag to get through but I didn't care for some of the characters in that book which may have had a lot to do with it
Forgot I just read Ender's Game again as well. Great book.
Some books I've read in the past 4 months
Benedict Spinozas Ethics
David Hume treastise on human nature
Descartes discourse on first philosophy
Reading Rousseaus Emile
Dinesh dsouza godforsaken
Next up:
Unbroken by Laura hillenbrand
Spinoza's treastise on politices
Kant
Atlas shrugged
I am a philosophy major hence some of these titles. However they are still quite interesting.
Just finished Without Remorse and Teeth of the Tiger (both Clancy), Have Space Suit, Will Travel (Heinlein), and The Long Walk (King). Becoming an even bigger fan of HeinleinJust looked that book up and found out the movie is coming out next year.
Ha. I was gonna ask if you were in Philo. Sounded like my ethics and philosophy of the mind classes (I too have a highly-sought-after Philosophy degree. wewt)
Finished book three of the Hunger Games last night. Not bad for some light reading. Moving onto...
Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe
Brad’s Sure Guide to SQL Server Maintenance Plans by Brad McGehee
Reading this now... so far it's fantastic.

SS is a great book. Rippetoe is a beast and the man when it comes to weightlifting.
I can't tell, but are you being sarcastic about being highly sought after? Funny you mention this as I just read an article stating that Phil majors are actually becoming highly sought after in the work force. From your experience, how has it been?
Back to Kants Groundwork.
Anyone have a recommendation on which translation to go with when reading Immanuel Kants Critique? Just finished his Groundwork and thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, Rousseau's Emile is a pretty good book. It starts slow in Book I/II, but Book III-V are pretty good.
One thing great about living in hawaii is that I get to read all these books at Waimea Bay on the north shore for most of the year.
I don't recall which version of Groundwork I read. I'll see if I still have a copy floating around but I never really jived with Kant so I doubt I kept it.
As for Philo degree being in high demand? I've yet to see a job posting that requests it but I've also never failed to get a job I interview for. Without fail, they ask why I got a philosophy degree. I always say something about a philo degree teaching you how to think, not just how to answer questions. Learning to break an idea down and analyze it translates directly into being a good worker. I think that's starting to trickle into the management heads as it is working well for me.
It was sarcastic though in that I think of Philo like Psych. If you want to do something DIRECTLY with your degree, you pretty much have to have a Phd. If not, it's just a degree. Most jobs just want to know that you can jump through the hoops and get a degree.
Not sure if I ever intended to use the degree for professional purposes (teaching and what not), but more for the exact reasons you stated in your post. I plan on going into medicine. I get a lot of weird looks, but general science classes were awfully boring to me. My college doesn't really offer a solid Zoology degree or Physiological Science degree, and a Biology degree just didn't interest me. While its a little more work now, I feel it will definitely pay off later.
Plus if Medicine doesn't workout, Law is a philosophers best friend :P!
So what's everyone been reading lately? Just went to Barnes & Nobles and picked up Book 1 in The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell. Read some pretty good things about it. Pretty much it's a military sci fi novel about a Captain who comes out of Hibernation 100 years after a heroic last stand battle where he was presumed dead and now has to lead the Alliance fleet to victory.
Also found a pretty cool hardcover book in clearance for 15$ called Warships: Inside Out, which has cross sections and other images on the inside of warships from as early as 1859 to now. Real nice book. Practically stealing it at the price of 15$ so I couldn't resist it.
I just read all the Harry Potter books as a break from my regular reading. Shouldn't take more than a month if you read before bed - they were written for kids after all!
I'm going to restart the Vince Flynn novels - still 'brain-off' type reading, but I enjoy them.
I've also read a bio on Marty Feldman. Pretty interesting to read about his life and compare it to other, more recent comedians.
TJ - 1994 TT
Just picked up these two books tonight
Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
and Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

latest read was 'Life of Pi'. LOVED the book.
Now artificially aspirated...
I haven't read books in a long time, but I love to read as well. I've been craving a new hobby, maybe reading can be just that! I don't have many friends that are into reading, but leave it to supraforums to have a great community of good people with a variety of tastes. Will have to thumb back through the many pages and make a run to barnes and noble pretty soon.
