    rod knock possibly

    hey guys

iv been searching for two days now and have read up on the different cases where people had or thought they had rod knock. well i may have a similar problem as i have diagnosed that it gets louder as RPM's increase above 2000 RPM suggesting something internal is touching where it shouldnt be. my question is, would it be straight foward to get to drop the oil pan and get to the crank, undo the rod bolts and check the bearings? or am i missing some way of correcting this problem. also should i replace the bearings or the rods as well - if there is no damage would i be good to use the rods?

    cheers

Droping the oil pan is no easy task, as it requires you to lift the engine to provide enough clearance to get the pan out. If your going to replace rod bearings, I would suggest just taking the entire engine out to save yourself the fustration of limited space.

FLZ Boy cheers for the input, i have realized that its no easy task after going through the repair and service manuals. ill have to check the oil and see if a magnet can pick up anthing, if not ill go from there.

If you suspect that you have spun your bearings, why dont you just drain the oil and look for metal shavings?

Yeah check the oil first, if it's suspect, then you will need to take a look at the block itself.

sorry to re-ignight this thread but I believe I have some rod knock after tracking my car tonight, I also found out that my engine was running with almost no oil (warning lights also did not show up, so thats a whole other issue). I'm guessing this isn't a repair for someone who's never torn apart an engine correct? my diagnosis was based on some engine sounds I listed too on youtube and its the exact same

If a rod is knocking, chances are the crank, main bearing, rod bearing are damaged and your better off pulling the engine for rebuild OR find a donor engine.

Used GE engines are relatively cheap to come by, but recently they are not as cheap as they use to be.

As for tracking the Supra, I would get an oil temp and oil pressure gauge/sending units. The stock oil level indicator light really isn't telling you whats going on with the oil on harsh conditions. High oil temps will kill seals ad bearings. Low oil pressure on high loads will give an indication there is oil starvation (also location of the sending unit does jnfluence the reading.

thanks man, think getting a doner short block is what i'm going to do.

As for tracking...it happened to be the last track day of the year (and likely last track day in my city as they're closing it down for some bullshit reason) so bad luck I suppose

pull each plug wire one by one and listen for a change in knock to find which cylinder it is.
