Day @ the range with my boy....

Last weekend went to a little outdoor range to spend some quality time with my son and try to sight in my new optics for my Enfield .308....

I started my son out on a .22 semi auto and then a .22lr bolt when he was around 5. He is currently 8 and doesn't want anything to do with his .22s anymore all he wants to shoot is my earlier Colt AR. He isnt a crack shot by no means but he is honing his skill pretty well IMHO.

Well here are some pics I thought I would share... Enjoy

He wanted to get a hold of the 308 but after 1 shot he was done.... he under estimated the kick.

One thing you can def see in this vid is that he is shooting right handed but is left eye dependent.... I wonder if this will have any ill affects on his accuracy when he grows up

I'm cross dominant and shoot with both eyes open. You can have him learn how to shoot left handed, or he will have to learn how to shoot with his non-dominant eye.

I have a friend like this, and he shoots left handed. That said, he's young enough that you can probably get him to learn with both eyes open and train his brain to process the information as needed. It is a bit frustrating at first, but I was later taught to shoot with both eyes open.

I'm left eyed and right handed, and when I was around his age, I started participating in NRA 50ft indoor smallbore 3-position matches.
After my tutor noticed my eye dominance, he switched me to shooting southpaw by default and my scores jumped. Shooting right handed I just wasn't as consistent.

Two big things - get him in good habits now when it comes to where/how he shoulders a rifle, and trigger pull/breathing. I know he's a youngin and nitpicking technique might seem a bit crazy, but he'll have a much better time with that AR if he brings the stock higher on his shoulder - especially once you get him shooting southpaw, it'll help him a lot with consistent sight picture.

As wolf13 also suggested, try to get him to where he shoots with both eyes open. I do, and because I initially learned right-handed, I'm almost as comfortable shooting right-handed and being able to switch to either side is a nice little advantage.

I wasn't a lot older than your boy when I started building my first AR15 - it was a lot more expensive in those days, though!

Very cool. What better way to share an afternoon than at the range with your kid.
