    targa top my 83

thinking about converting my 1983 supra to targa top, any thoughts? planning on welding doors shut and modifying a window up and down switch in behind door handle and making access dukes of hazard style, also planning on putting in a 350 sbc chevy engine with a 600 b&m blower

was just curious on the input, stretched a rod in the old motor rendering it useless without a complete rebuild, and if went to the extent of that i had many options, 1; rebuild the motor back to stock, 2; bore over and build into a stroker, 3; order a remanufactured engine and just swap stock for stock, 4; swap in a completely different engine ie 2jzgtte or 350 small block, then do i leave it a stock 350 or boost it or supercharge it. many options. the idea of coverting it to a targa top was an after thought, some come with a sun roof (not myne) and later models come with a targa top so instead of just buying a different one just converting myne into having one.

also those who like to talk crap need to grow up or keep it to them selves, and as nightrider760 said it is my car, u dont have to look to at it, u dont have to drive it, i like to be original and have a one of a kind a car, stock is good but its not personalized to me, hence the whole reason aftermarket parts exist. i look forward to all comments good or bad, just not disrespectful

    1. I hope you have good insurance If you do make it a targa..
    2. Do not say we did not tell you to do it, we warned you and if shit hits the fan well...we told you
    3. If any motor goes in there a 2jz would be sick fuck the 350 bullshit.

i do understand making it a targa would jepordize the strength of the unibody, but i would make modifications to ensure it wouldnt buckle. if i were to make the modification i have been considering welding the doors shut and going with a seamless look by also welding panels over the door handle holes, access would be a means of a hidden switch to roll down the windows or modify the targa to have a built in sleek door handle and have window switches mounted on the drivers side support or whatever it would be called that the windshield rests on, and also have already lowered it, top door hight is approx 36" off the ground. as of right now its all just a thought. also ended up buying an imported 5mge to put in for the time being, but am still looking at putting somthing in that pushes a bit more power, heavily looking into doing the 2jzgtte swap but like the targa top im still debating

I have never heard of this 2jzgtte engine, where do you get such a thing? Does the extra"t" mean it has 4 turbos? I should look into getting one of those.

You clearly are a carbed V8 nut swinger, talking about stroking a 5M or ordering a crate engine? Lmfao! Read up and learn about your car before posting your pipe dreams.

And the reason some of us are dicks is that we admire and respect the heritage of these cars and hate to see a good one get ruined by someone who found a cheap RWD car and wants it to be everything its not.

Here is something intelligent and relevant, it is a 2jzgte, not a 2jzgtte. Nissan names their twin turbo engines with the "TT" nomenclature. Toyota uses "T" for every turbo engine, whether single or twin. You want to make a car a targa and add some bracing, hoping it will be ok? I hope you realize that the MKII was NEVER intended to be a targa, and you will have to add a ton of bracing in order to make it stable, and it still will not be safe in the event of a crash. The 350 is dead, if you are going to put ANY chevy motor in there, an LS series would be a much better choice.

In the end, it is your car. If you wish to destroy what Toyota created, it is your prerogative.

thank you, and your right the 350 is out, the thought of putting it in was mainly for looks with an abundance of unnessesary horse power, being a supercharger, i like the way the old hot rods look but love toyotas, and had only considered combining the two, hence the reason why im looking for input, but you dont think the idea of welding the doors shut would give enough strenth to the unibody for a targa top? wouldnt it look pretty sweet being seamless bumber to bumper?

I wouldn't trust a targa top MKII with a 6 pt cage. Hell, if I had a targa MKIII or MKIV, it would have a 10pt just to get rid of the wet noodle feel of a car designed that way from the factory that was beaten on for 20 years.

In all honesty, sell your hard top to someone who is looking for one and then buy one with a factory sunroof. The hardtop cars are much harder to find and there are taller guys out there that are looking for the increased headroom of a hard top car. Please do not cut up a clean hardtop car!
