1968 ~ 2011 Opel (GT - Manta - Calibra)

Opel GT (1968-1973)

Its styling has been likened to the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette which went on sale in September 1968.
The Opel GT was equipped with a base 1.1 L OHV straight-4 engine, which produced 67 hp (SAE) at 6000 rpm. However, most buyers chose an optional 1.9 L Cam-In-Head (CIH) engine, which produced 102 hp (SAE) at 5200 to 5400 rpm. Some of the early 1968 models also came with a slightly higher compression "H" code cylinder head. In 1971, due to emissions regulations, Opel reduced the compression ratio of the U.S.1.9 L engine and output fell to 83 hp (SAE). There was also a GT/J model, which was a less expensive version of the 1900GT sold only in Europe. Standard transmission was a manual 4-speed. A three-speed automatic was available with the 1.9 L engine. The model run of the Opel GT was from 1968 to 1973.

Opel Manta A (1970-1975)

Number one: the chassis and engine of the first came from Manta Ascona, the name lent itself Opel with a stingray

From mild to wild: During the smallest engine in Manta A 1100 petite 60 hp at the rear axle sent, provided the two-liter engines of competition cars around 200 hp.

Great success: From 1970 to 1975 Opel built nearly half a million Manta A
At the end of sports: four round tail lamps in a sharp edge demolition were simply mandatory for sports cars. The light edge in the trunk lid is still not out of fashion
Solid machine: The 90 hp 1.9-liter, with the 970kg(2,134lbs) of light Manta A little effort

Opel Manta B 400 (1981-84)

The Manta 400 served as a base for the rally sport. Of the 144 horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder coupe that accelerated up to 210km/h(131mph)
245 units built

Opel Manta B (1975-1988)

So much tuning factory was rare: skirts, spoilers, rally mirror and anthracite-colored wheels were standard in Premium GSi
Long and lean: The Manta B is 4.44 meters long, 1.67 meters, but narrow
Empty weight about 1,000kg(2,200lbs). With the two-liter injection engine and 110 horsepower, the four-seater, very good progress. Maximum 187km/h(117mph)
Engines where available ranging from the small 1,2 litre OHV engine, the 1,6 litre CIH and the 1,9 litre CIH. Also in 1976 the GT/E engine from the Manta A series was adapted into the Manta B programme spawning the GT/E Manta B series. In 1979 the GT/E had the engine replaced with the new 2,0 litre CIH and with a new designed Bosch L injection system. Power output was now 110 bhp (82 kW). The 1.9 litre engine gave way to the 2,0 litre S engine which was aspirated by a Varajet II carburettor. This engine was the most used engine by Opel at the time, and was to be found in several Opel Rekord cars.

Opel Calibra (1990-1997)

The Opel Calibra also known as the Chevrolet Calibra in South America, the Holden Calibra in Australia and New Zealand, and the Vauxhall Calibra in the United Kingdom is a sports car produced by German automaker Opel between 1989 and 1997.
Coupé success: The first was Calibra 1990 to 1997 nearly 240,000 units built.
2.0L 16V Calibra Turbo 4x4 - 204 hp, all-wheel drive, 250km/h(156mph) maximum speed.

2011 Opel Calibra

The strongest unit, the two-liter turbo, comes to 250hp. Enough for a sports coupe. Additionally, there will be a 1.4-liter - and 1.6-liter turbo engine with outputs from 130 to 200 hp and 110 to 190 hp turbo-diesel

I have never found any Opel to be attractive. Never. Just a small and ugly econobox to me.

I am constantly amazed on the horrid designs, fashion, architecture, etc... in the Late 70's and early 80's. It's unreal.

A neighbor of mine has about four of the first Opel Gt's and they're neat looking little cars. I never knew about some of those models that came there after though...

"Hardtop turbo Supras represent the lightest and stiffest of all the MKIV Supras (hardtops only available from 1993-1995). There were only 326 sold in the USA, and they are coveted by many of us for their pure performance nature. To myself, and many others, they represent the ultimate MKIV...the most pure and highest performance platform from which to begin with when creating an affordable supercar."

thanks for posting this I my first non american car was the opel manta rallye. It died when I got T bonded in Buffalo Ny one winter. Later on I had a 280z and wrecked it with a rollover and needed a car and I bought a very used opel GT it was had more holes in it then swiss cheese and no heater or defroster which was fun in Roch NY winter. They were both fun cars though and this brought back some memories. As far a 70 and 80 cars being ugly I wonder what the verdict will be about current cars in 30 years? here is an article about the manta rallye and picture reminiscent of my old car old car lust: http://www.carlustblog.com/2008/04/car-lust--opel.html

Beats me. All I know is I was alive and well in the 70's and 80's when the Opel was popular, and I thought they were ugly back then.
