opinions on mk3 7mgte
hey all I have been looking for a mk3 w/7mgte for a parts car for my mk2 7mgte swap. I have found one that has 220k on it and not running. The guy is asking $600 for it and will negotiate price. Do yall think that this is worth it?

If you're going to be pushing it any harder than bone stock boost, and you buy the engine used without a very clear and honest picture of its history, you're going to want to rebuild it... there's really no way around it.
That said, you should figure out why this heap of scrap doesn't run before you shell out $600 for it... "not running" is not a clear picture of whether it is a good starting point or if the best repair for the car is a rag and torch. It would serve no purpose to buy a MkIII that had all sorts of electrical gremlins, which is why it's not running, as opposed to paying double (or triple) for a good runner that was rear ended, rolled, ect. A light rod knock or BHG would be great too. In the end, mechanically sound isn't a bad thing... electrically sound and consistent is what you're looking for. Good luck. |

you know what Tanya I have sent you various pms on here and CS inquiring about shit and you never respond so i dont wanna hear nothin from you
maybe I didnt clarify this right, I am doing a 7mgte swap in my mk2. I already have my 7mgte for my mk2! I already have everything needed to do the swap except my wiring harness. I was looking for a complete parts car and finally found one that interests me that is complete. The guy said that it needed some gaskets (prob. head gasket) and that the motor itself had 50k on it. Thanks peoples

buy it and rebuild it before you use it. any 7mgte you get should be rebuilt first. unless you buy it already rebuilt. these engines are old and usually have been beaten on ALOT!

lolololol. I don't recall getting any PMs on here from you. And I get all kinds pf PMs on cs.com. Apparently my 15,000 post count means I'm a master mechanic? I can't help everyone with all their problems, sorry. but I def agree on a rebuild on any 7MGTE set you get unless it has proper paperwork that it had been rebuilt recently. good luck.

yes people I bought the car, The guy I bought it from said that it got 50-60k on the enginge and just needed gaskets, but who knows. I thought it was the head gasket had blowed cause I've read about it being pretty common on the forums. We tore it down ine the last few days and low and behold the awesome greddy metal head gasket was blowed to pieces ( saw the receipt for it) , probably never got retorked, so we are gonna put a head gasket set on the bitch and hope for the best, if it doenst run right I am going to sell the body and keep every last part for ME HAHAHAHA!!!! This car has receipts and maintainance papers in a baggy for alot of stuff. The body is in kick ass shape as well as the maroon metallic paint and targa top. The only thing the body needs is the front nose piece and some clear coat in places, great car. I paid cheap for it so I will come out good either way. But I hop that it doesnt knock. I want to drive a mk3 for a little while just to say I had one. Thanks peoples
Keep in mind that my original plan was just to get it for a parts car....who knows what vast horizons will unveil HAHAHAHAHA Sorry like to act crazy sometimes Last edited by Linchmob; 11-09-2009 at 03:25 PM. |

we'll know when it cranks and runs a little bit. We polished the head yesterday and we're checking for warpage next couple of days, ordered a fel-pro head gasket. Sorry ya'll cant post pics unless I get my buddy to take them, have no computer at home and my grandparents computer barely runs dsl and has windows 98. but for the price I gave for this car you would all be very jealous

we took the head to a machine man, 4 bent valves, warped, needed resurfacing. glad we took it to him instead of putting it in there with gaskets only. Getting head rebuilt, then gonna put it in and put it back together, thought about rebuidling lower half but wanna try this first.

Here are the pictures of it for all interested. Just have had time to upload them. These are all I have right now, I'll get more soon. It should be together, ready to run in a week or so Chris says. It's a pretty car, I'll give it that. Looks better since they buffed the paint.
