Unbelievable Story....

So today, I woke up this morning and decided to head over to my girlfriends house to suprise her / wake her up.

Well... on the way up the onramp to the highway, I noticed that my hood seemed like it was open... I looked down at my speedometer to see that I had been doing 35 mph, and was about to hit 40mph. I consiously thought that my hood had to be locked down, so I continued to accelerate.

Well.... to my shock and surprise, just a few seconds later after noticing my hood movement... it flew up and smashed through my window and into two loosely held together pieces. I pulled over immediately, and walked around to the front to close and lock my hood. I inspected the damage, and it seemed that my hood had been manufactured in two places, and thereby separated somewhat at the seams. My windshield had also taken a good beating. So, I locked odwn the hood, making sure that I heard a click, and proceeded to drive off the highway onramp. Just as I was getting off the onramp, the top half of my hood flew up, seperated from my hood, and flew off the back of the car. To my astonishment, the car behind me swerved and the hood lay in the middle of the road. So... I immediately pulled over, and started running back to it.

But, by the time I had gotten two it, it had been run over by at least a few cars coming to a stop at the light. I ended up pulling it out from behind an SUV parked there. So, I quickly took the partial hood back to my car, and called my friend with a truck, but he did not pick up. My next challenge was to figure out how to get the hood to fit in the car with me.

It wouldn't fit in the trunk... so I took off the targa, and stuck the hood in between the front seats, and the rear seat. I proceeded to continue the few more mile drive to my girlfriend's house at 25 mph or less with the hood sticking out of my roof.

As soon as things calmed down a bit, I called a friend of mine and explained all this to him, and he told me that he thought I was lying.... so therefore, I felt it would be a half decent story to post.

Anyways... here are the pictures of when I got here....

Sorry to hear about your misfortune but look at the bright side you won't have overheating problems now =P. Looks like your lights could use a little TLC.

Damn that sucks. Who manufactured your hood?

That is one way to cool down your engine bay.

The hood is an Ab-Flug or Ab-Flug replica. The exact same thing happened to a friend of mine. The only difference was that he was racing and hit a bump. His was suppose to be a genuine Ab-Flug (he paid $2,000 for it), but I always wondered after that incident. Glad you are safe.

lol that sucks.... I saw your car at the morakimi meet just a few weeks ago... I'd be pissed and just get a new hood, I've been thinking of switching to the Top Secret hood but my stock hood has saved my ass at least 5 times I noticed it wasnt latched doing 80mph and it never blew up!

you probably could sue the hood manufacturer, but since the separation did not cause any subsequent damage and may have been cause by you leaving your hood locked and it hitting the windshield, there are no "damages" in the legal sense.

The car is/was going in for a full paint job at the end of july/early august..... I'm still trying to decide on what paint color

The hood was for sale in the for sale section until this incident happened.... I'm hoping to repair it, and still have it available for sale within a few days...

I don't think I could sue anyone due to the fact that I didn't actually buy the hood, but infact, it came with the car. I could try tracking down the previous owner, but I think I should just cut my losses, repair it, and get rid of it. I am getting a lot of experience repairing fiberglass/building enclosures and I think I am getting quiet good

Oh well... I appreciate everyone's sympathy and somewhat understanding.

Well I guess it's good that this happened before the paint job. I guess they can fix any damages that has occured since it left the shop.

You are supposed to have hood pins on Carbon or fiber glass hoods. No matter if its a real name brand model.
