Suprashootout Track Day at TGPR a blast!
The last event in the Suprashooout put on by Jeremy Blackwell was the track day at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway www.tgprace.com which while a short road course is still a lot of fun and a good time was had by all (although they were a few victims of bad mechanical crap. This event got "rolled" into a Cobra SVT club event which proved interesting. I was chief instructor and had my crapbox CRX at the track and on day two (the suprashootout part) my tires turned out to be toast pretty quickly. On saturday I thought my engine was hurt from my last trip to TGPR (overheated). It didn't crank for crap and vtech would not kick on. Found out today that a sending unit the ECU needed to make the car crank up right and turn on vtech was disconnected. Problem fixed and now at 6K revs the car sounded mean again.
Lots of nice cars and it was good to see some old faces that I have not seen in a while like Larry Markert who came to drive his ex "death supra" (my nickname for it since I was the instructor who had to sit in it for Arthur Mulderwho know owns the car). Arthur drove fine. It is the car is that is scary. Damn that car is fast and hell it is an automatic. They put three coolers for the tranny all with fans. It would get on its operating limit near the end of the session but considering all the damn power being put down with those 285fr/335r RA-1s the tranny did great. I will be honest (and I told them this) if I was an instructor at Road Atlanta and I saw this car I probably would refuse to instruct anyone in it. I remember Larry was saying he was hitting about 168mph on the back straight at RA in it when he had it. Sorry I want a full cage, nomex, and my hands on the wheel at that speed. Saw Ron Friday on saturday (pun intended) another Road Atlanta supra face and he returned on Sunday to get pressed into instructor duty for me. He was fast, smooth and consistent so he got drafted. Also saw another supra owner who I gave a ride in the CRX last March at the NASA event when his stock twins did the death whine. My other student was Chinchi Chiang with his awesome white single supra. It was his first track day and he was very respectful of the power of his car. Unfortunately rolling up in grid on session two he blew a front seal and their was a bunch of oil on the belly pan. Onto the trailer it went. I had toasted worn my front tires down to where I knew they were going to cord any minute so with FWD, I just put them on the rear!! But yep, they were really toast. I toke someone out for a ride and on the secon hot lap I lost it in the sweeper off the back straight when the rear was ass hanging too much (believe it or not the rear steps out "rotates" on entry and then you roll into the throttle to set the car). Well this time it was too much I rolled into the throttle to pull it out and the rear just went at about 75 or 80mph. Spun, blue smoke, in the grass, engine still running though and I got it straightened up and went on. No flat spots. Went back out and then lost it in turn one with no warning driving "normal" for an instructor. So I called it a day. I hope this event keeps the track day next year if there is a next year. I think several people's eyes got opened up to track events and it was great to see seven or so Supras all at one event doing a road course. Barry H. |

The dominos pizza pan sized rotors (Stoptech) on the "death supra" which is what keeps death away.

Mitsuibhishi VR4 which blew turbo seals on track and well it did catch fire. Nothing like seeing flames coming out while driving the down the track. The driver pulled in to a pit "crew" waiting with fire extiinguishers. It took three to put it out. The owner had a great attitude about it. Stuff happens.

Tricke out Evo with dyslexic stickers on the right side. Battleground car. They read the "right" way on the other side.

The owner was nice enough to ask me to abuse his nice supercharged G35 badged as a "skyline". After driving my stripped out, loud, stiff, twitchy CRX it was fun driving in "luxury" of interiors, softer suspension. The car was fun to drive. I thought it was balanced nice. It had Brembo brakes and while I was braking early (at least for me) I still stunk them up some. The pedal was a little mushy after I got through with it. Nice car making nice sounds. Tranny and pedal arrangement works well for rev matching.

Quick, doing the chief instructor "thing" I didn't have the opportunity to observe any one on one duking it out with a supra and one of the Cobras. A lot of the Cobras ran on saturday and a lot smaller gathering of them on sunday. I will say that there were some very serious Cobras out there. A brother of a track buddy of mine had his at the track on saturday and it was putting down 530rwhp every time you crank it up. Very serious acceleration and he had it set up for track work.
Also in general (not you Ron or Larry) the Cobra guys had more track time under their belt than most (not all) of the Supra folks. We all know that half of your speed is the nut behind the wheel. Now for me to get some "new" used tires to run. I swear I am going to buy some new shaved RA-1s in a 225/45/15 and swear off the spec miatas throwaway tires 205/50/15s. It is hard to give up free tires but they are heat cycled out more. If I get fatter fresh tires I can knock a few seconds off of my lap times. Oh yeah, one of my instructors brought out a rental Gran Marquis when he car was not ready. He said "I can take out all my students at once". He was not kidding. Throughout the day I alway saw him with three or four people in the car on the verge of disaster, plowing and leaning like a mother. He is a very good driver on the track and I know riding with him was scary but they kept coming back for more. Jeremy you need to do this again in 06. Glad to help. Barry H. it was good to see the supras having fun on the track, I was happy to see a lot of first timers give it a shot you all did great!!!! I want to thank Barry for riding with Arthur in the widebody , I know the pucker factor can be quite high with a new driver on a roadcourse but Arthur did great and he said that Barry was a great instructor and he picked up a lot. Thanks to Jeremy for putting on a good event for us to enjoy, I had a blast !!!! I also want to thank Roy for a ride in the C5 hes a smooth and fast driver, and special thanks to Arthur for letting me drive his Supra it made my year! Barry you owe me a ride in the screaming yellow Zonker
that thing looks sick, hope you all have a great week. Larry M. |

Sunday was a blast! Thanks for the help Barry, you are a top notch driver. Next year we will be doing several road course events here, not just at Supra Shootout 2006. We are in the process of organizing a Supra/300ZX/RX7 meet sometime in early/mid summer that will have a dyno shootout, car show, drag race, and road course. Another one of my websites will also be hosting the 2nd annual 300ZX Nationals in April, and the road course day will be open to Supras as well.
I'm also in the process of making a picture gallery to host pictures for the event, which should be done later today. If you have pictures or videos from Supra SHootout this year, please email them to me and I'll post them up. The main link to the event is located here: http://www.supraforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=304789 |

Great event! I will definitely be doing this a lot more often from now on!
It was awesome to see Arthur's "Il Monstre" Supra in action with Larry behind the wheel again, as well as the other various sick cars including a fast turbo Miata that looked like it was going to fly away!

Hey folks, It's Jim with the Mitsu Spyder.... Got the car back to my garage and did a full detail of the car last night and yes Jeremy it's nice and pretty again. :-) Some good news, but no verdict yet... The rear turbo was not the problem after a brief look it looks like it was either the oil return line or oil feed line underneith near the oil pan. The to end looks perfect just like before, however we did notice the rear engine mount was cooked... That's a real pain to get to... Anyway, I will post an update tomorrow once I actually get under the car... Still had a blast... :-)
Thanks, Jim R - 1EVIL1 |
