3.4L 1991 Toyota MR2 5VZFE (Pictures)
I never post here but I do a lot of research on this site but I finally decided I would participate. Here is my MR2 project and since Im entering the Toyota 6 cyl. world I figured you guys might care.
Well I picked up this gem with a blown NA motor and a fairly large boo boo over the passenger rear fender. Right now I have taken the motor out and started to strip the car to get all the dents taken out, the body clean, and painted. Then the swap will begin, although I do have pretty much everything except for a bit of knowledge to complete the swap. Here's whats going into the car for phase 1. 2000 5VZ-FE w/ 67,331 miles 1999 Solara Transmission w/ 26,000 miles Turbo Axles w/ ATS axle cages Clutchmasters 6 puck, unsprung clutch Stock 1MZ-FE flywheel Custom 2.5" Exhaust 255lph Walbro Pump LSD Phase 2 and 3 consist of: 57mm, .70a/r turbine T4 turbo Custom 3" exhaust Custom Intake manifold S2S 268/268 Camshafts S2S Racing Valve Springs S2S High Volume Oil Pump Hydra Nemesis EMS Unkown injector size (at this time) ![]() ![]() ![]()

Looks like it will be a monster when you are finished. I guess suspension is phase 4?

Pretty awesome swap, even better that you are doing all the work.
Question what kind of compressor / gun did you used? |

AutoXr, Suspension is already mostly done. It has Tokico Illumina 5 way shocks, Eibach Sportline springs and Suspension Techniques sway bars. Coilovers are probably phase 4 along with some nice wheels to fit big tires under there.
94 Silver, I started out using my 26 Gallon Husky compressor and quickly found it was not up to the task of painting. I borrowed my brother in laws same 26 gallon compressor and T-fitted them together to make a 52 gallon compressor and then it did just fine. I bought a cheap $50 gun at Harbor Freight tools to lay down the primer and then use my Fenix gun to lay the good stuff down. I ended up hating the expensive gun and used the $50 gun for the whole project. K2_2, the solara transmission actually is the same transmission as the 1993+ E153 mr2 turbo tranny with a different center section(shifter cables face the wrong way), and it has longer gear ratios. I wanted the longer gear ratios for the V6 since it wont rev quite like a 2.0 4cyl. and I'll have tons more torque. Even though the Solara tranny bolts up, you need to use the 1mzfe(3.0 camry/ES300) flywheel because it has the same crank bolt pattern as the 5vz crank but has a smaller diameter flywheel that matches the MR2 turbo clutch size perfectly. So to review I have a 5vz engine, 1mz flywheel, mr2 turbo clutch, solara tranny, mr2 turbo axles. Thanks for the props everybody. |

Cool swap, there's one running around in Portland, OR with that motor too. Don't know how popular it is, but it def can be done.

this is a crazy swap for these cars. there's several turbo versions of it running around too. these things get up and fly with these swaps, and they almost look factory when done right. it's astonishing how the engines sit in the bay like they were meant to be there.
i was playing with the idea of strapping a camry v6 into my mk1 for a while, but now i've decided to just turbo the 4age instead. good luck with the project, it looks like a ton of fun. |

As a former mr2 owner, Ive always wanted to take the chasis and put a 6 cylinder in it. What motor are you exactly putting in it? Could you document the costs and estimated labor value to complete the project. thanks.

Hi 93smgturbo, thanks for the info. It sounds like a bit of work, but doable with the right parts. Definitely keep us updated.

That is sweet, I have been looking around for a mr2 with a blown motor waiting for one to pop up at the right price. I think that motor would sound sick as fuck right behind your head!

If you have a turbo chassis and a good turbo transmission you can do the swap for about $3,000-$4,000. If you have an NA chassis it will cost you about $4,000-$6,000 depending on what tranny you want to use. A 91-92 will cost you $150-$300. A 93+ will cost you about $1,000-$1,200 with axles. If you have an NA you will need tranny, axles, hubs, shifter cables, and clutch out of a turbo mr2. Im probably forgetting something else. Im surprised nobody's recognized the color. Its RSP

RSP looks good on the MR2. Does that wing have clear on it? Looks like there is some peel in the paint. I love the two tone. It would look killer on some black wheels IMO.
