Need Help With A potential Purchase

Hi guys, I've been looking to buy a MKIV Supra for a while now but they're hard to come by in my area but I do see some posted here and there. I'm from Ontario, Canada if anyone's wondering.

So anyways, I found one that's close by for a reasonable price and I wanted to make sure that what the person has posted regarding the car is true.

The thing is I like cars but I know almost nothing about them at all. I can do minor work like changing the brakes, calipers, rotors, oil change, headlight/taillight, tires, engine belt, spark plugs. I've done all of these things but I don't know anything else. I've looked at posts in the forums here about people's builds and things but I haven't got a clue about anything people talk about in their build posts or anything. I don't know anything about turbos, ecu or like any of that stuff I just don't have that sort of knowledge.

The person posted a list of modifications done to the car and I'm not sure what most of them are. Or whether they're good or bad or what use they may have. I was hoping you guys could help me understand them. Here's the list:

As aftermarket parts this is a list with the most important improvements:
- Keyless entry with alarm
- CST 18" Rims (Circuit Spec Tune)
- European style E13 Headlights glass covered
- 2 Brand new Bride seats
- Custom coilover suspension
- FET SPORTS strut tower bar
- MFR radiator cap
- Brand new Personal Nardi Grinta steering wheel with JDM quick release adaptor
- Brand new GT Radial - Champiro 328 tires 235/40/18-front 265/35/18-rear
- Air filter and the intake line
- Kakimoto racing muffler - the whole exhaust line
- TRD 320km/h 5 gauge-set
- ground kit
The overall amount of the aftermarket parts easily exceeds $5000, so whatever you'll pay for the car will me more than reasonable.

Also, the person that posted the ad has listed lots of things about the car which I'm having trouble verifying. They're claiming things like:

Original color is 8L5 known as Royal Sapphire Pearl. Toyota used this color between 1997-1998 on a number of only 7 NA, which means that beside this car only 6 other NA Supras have the same color in the whole world.
It has the V161 Getrag 6 speed transmission which makes this car a special one. 1997 Toyota Supra NA with 6 speed transmission is a very rare car and hard to find. Being an 1997 Anniversary Edition it has the black tinted stop lights.

If anyone could help me out with understanding the things done to the car and help verify if things above seem proper I'd really appreciate the help.

Thanks for reading and hopefully I can join the Supra Club soon!

Honestly, none of those other mods add any value. Stock cars are fetching more money these days. If the car is a true RSP car, in good condition (clean title, vin tags present, no rust), and has been converted to a V161 (10k trans), I would say that is a fantastic starting point for a NA car. If that were near me, I would pick that up.

How would I know if it's actually been swapped to a V161 and what is RSP?

RSP - Royal Sapphire Pearl (the color in the picture). On a LHD it will be visible on the door tag when the driver door is open, maybe passenger in a RHD. You should 8L5 on the tag. It will also give you the transmission code on the same tag. Since yours has been converted to a ,V161 the the will likely say W58.(not V160/V161). I would first make sure its a six speed, which would rule of W58 and R154 transmissions (both 5 speeds). To verify it is a V161, your going to have to get under there and look.

Oh ok thanks for clarifying about the RSP and I forgot I could look at the VIN for information on the car. I actually was looking at the Supra VIN specifications a few hours ago. And I get I can tell whether or not it's 6spd but when you say get under there and look do you mean literally under the car and look? Because I have no idea what I'd be looking for or how to actually tell. I'll definitely bring someone who knows stuff about cars I guess when I take a look.

It wasn't swapped to a V161, it's an SZ-R which came as a stock NA with an optional V161 starting in ~96 or so. Being a JDM car it also didn't have VIN tags on all the parts like US market cars.
It's a pretty uncommon color for an SZ-R but it bugs me that the seller is quoting LHD US market production numbers which have nothing to do with JDM production numbers.

There's also a lot more than 7 non turbos that came with RSP paint in the US market, he's just quoting one of the touted numbers for US market RSP NA hardtops that have been posted here and elsewhere on the internet. At least a few dozen RSP NA's were shipped to the US with sport roof/targa tops. Which of course again has nothing to do with this car being an SZ-R or its rarity, etc. LHD RSP cars are their own market and that will never change and this car is not part of that market.

It's a cool SZ-R, though. There's a silver riveted metal build plate in the engine bay that will indicate the paint code and original transmission. V161 and 8L5 should be seen on that tag if that's its original configuration.

Edit:
'97's were only badged as 15th Anniversary Edition cars in the North American market. Being a JDM car means it's not an anniversary edition either, it's a 97 model year SZ-R in a cool configuration.

Seller is kind of an ass for conflating these things with the US market cars.

Thanks for the detailed reply and clearing things up!

Edit: I've sent the owner of the car a message and I'll update once I get a reply/things start moving.

What he said. I would buy that if everything checks out.

I sent an email but I still haven't got a response. And no number was listed. I have a feeling that this is too good to be true. The car was listed for $14,000 CAD with 114k kms.

$10,000 for a hardtop factory RSP car with 70k miles and a V161? That car would sell for 30-35k easy if not more.

The site has another RSP and it's a 6spd gte with stock turbos with 134k kms for 16k and other colours all less than $20k and are 6spds

If US legal, yes.
But 96-97+ cars like this one are still a bit cheaper than 25 year legal options depending on the model and the market. $14k CAD is a nice price for that car, regardless.

What Wreckless said. You would be able to tell the originality of the car by checking out its chassis plate under the hood. An original W58 car that's been swapped to the V160 will still say W58 on the plate.

Regardless, that seems awfully cheap for an SZ-R in that trim with that amount of miles/kilometers. Or maybe I'm just blinded by the people paying through the roof here in the States for one.

Two things:
-If you can't see the car in person and handle all the transaction in person, it's not a legitimate option. Best case, it's not a scam. Worst case, you're out all that money and there never was a car in the first place...

-On the subject of not knowing anything about cars, you sound like you have a pretty decent baseline knowledge of cars and mechanical things. That's a great starting point, so don't sell yourself short. I still learn new things about Supras all the time, and I've been playing with them, tearing them apart and rebuilding them for about 15 years now. You'll figure it out in time if you put in the effort.

Yeah good points, I won't be sending money or doing anything without seeing the car and checking it all out in person. I've actually been on vacation since Feb 15 and I don't get back till March 26th. So until then I can't actually go and see any cars. And I still haven't gotten any replies from any of the ads I wrote about above. There was a number on 1 or 2 of them which I'll try calling once I get back and hopefully arrange a meeting. But if those numbers don't work out I'm not going to bother with that site, it's already seeming very sketchy. And thanks for the kind words
