Thread: Alternator bearing noise?

  1. #1

    Alternator rectifier noise?

Progressively gotten louder over the last few weeks.
Not sure if it's the idler pulley, alternator bearing, fan clutch, or something else..
It's definitely coming from the passenger side of the front of the engine.

Thought I'd ask before throwing parts at it..

Take the belt off. If it is that bad, you can turn the pulley of everything in the bay and you will feel it not being smooth but choppy. Probably the alternator with that whine.

Did in fact turn out to be alternator. Did some more research and the noise seems to have been coming from the diode bridge/rectifier. Which I believe is responsible for converting AC current to DC. So my battery probably wasn't too happy about that..
Swapped out the 25yr old part part and the sound is gone now. Pulley on the new alternator was also much easier to spin, so bearing was probably on its way out too.
