MKIII Born with Auto Transmission A340, Swapping to Manual Transmission R154

MKIII Born with Auto Transmission, Swapping to Manual Transmission

    • Mechanical
      • Remove auto shifter assembly
      • Remove flex plate from motor
      • Install flywheel
        • Use new hardware, OEM(90105-10042) or ARP P/N# 203-2802 (Comes in pack of 8 or Driftmotion sells 6 of them)
        • Install new pilot bearing OEM (90363-12002-77)
      • Install manual transmission and clutch
        • Turbo Supra = R-154 / N/A Supra = W58
        • Auto Bell-housing bolts(91611-61060) are shorter than Manual Bell-housing bolts(90119-10019), get them from Toyota
      • Remove auto brake pedal assembly
      • Install manual brake pedal assembly
      • Install clutch pedal assembly
    • Electrical
      • TCCS (Toyota Computer Controlled System)
        • Auto TCCS will run the engine, idle will sometimes bounce slightly
        • Manual TCCS will plug in and operate correctly.
      • ECT (Electronic Controlled Transmission)
        • Remove from passenger side kick panel
      • Starting Circuit
        • Separately wire each side of lower clutch switch to Pins 2 and 3 of Under hood Connector “D” Here
        • Additionally, you can wire in a switch in parallel here to allow starting without clutch pedal depressed, this will also disable cruise)
      • ABS (if equipped)
        • Plug in rear abs speed sensor(located on transmission) as normal
          • R-154
          • W58
      • Cruise
        • Cruise controller is conveniently mounted above the clutch pedal
        • Wire one side of top clutch switch to ST sig (thick black/white wire) of cruise controller (disconnect from harness side)
        • Wire the other side of switch to chassis ground (this will allow cruise to disable immediately when you depress the clutch pedal)
      • Reverse Lights Use this link
        • Disassemble the 2 wires in the manual transmission side of the reverse light connector “C”
        • Connect one wire to harness side Pin 1 on connector “B”
        • Connect the other wire to harness side Pin 5 on connector “A”
    • Clutch
      • Master Cylinder
        • IIRC the master cylinder is the same for W58 and R154.
      • Slave Cylinder
        • Depending on which transmission get the appropriate slave cylinder and associated lines.
    • Driveshaft
      • OEM 2 piece front (intermediate propeller) shaft will need to be changed to match appropriate transmission selected.
      • Aftermarket one piece driveshaft
    • Gauge Cluster
      • Tachometer is interchangeable, if you want to remove the O/D and ECT PWR light
      • Turbo tachometer and N/A tachometer are different

I've been seeing a few new threads about swapping and I believe our past thread was deleted during the big thread cleanup of 2012 (or was it 2013, I forget but otherwise thank you mods for taking the time to do that). So I threw this together over this mornings coffee, now I'd like to get some input/additions/corrections here(post here and I'll edit). Then, after corrections/additions have been made and approved by the OG's, lock and move to the FAQ(mods permitting). If I wasted my time here let me know but I thought it was a good way to contribute and kill a cup of coffee at the same time.

I think you forgot about installing the pilot bearing...

    Otherwise looks nice and clean!

Don't lock and delete just sticky and put it next to my thread then move it to the faq. We do need this thread since there are a lot of new people swapping there trans

No way I would either lock and delete a useful thread like this

We're going to sticky this and let people put in their knowledge and two cents. When there aren't really any qualms we'll move it to the FAQ section, for now it gets attention as a stickied thread.

This thread is how to install a MT into a Supra born with an AT. It has nothing to do with overhauling the R154, just follow the TSRM if you want to overhaul it.

Start a new thread for your question, this thread isn't about overhauling R154s, why did you think it was?

I have heard from other forums that the corresponding W58/R154 back plate is required for the swap. Is this true? Because I feel like the only way I could get one is if I went to a junk yard and tore it out of a 7M/W58 combo. Or if I could get the dimensions, functional requirements, and clearances, I could probably manufacture one myself. Also, I heard that the auto ECU needs to be removed, but no additional ECU needs to be installed. This is the only thread that mentions a MT TCCS.

Hello everyone, appreciate the write up!! Im in the process of doing this swap on my 7m. My question is: In the future, if i decide to go JZ, can i use most of the existing equipment; flywheel, driveshaft, etc.? I know the Bell-housing will need to change. Thanks again, please forgive my ignorance.

I read something about needing to switch out the throttle cables when going from automatic to manual. Is this true or will the one in the car work? Also I read that the lines going from the trans to the radiator need to be switched as well, is this true or will the ones currently in the car work?

Since I'm going to change shells soon, just wanted to verify there is nothing in the tunnel that needs to be messaged?

Going to guess this same applies to rhd cars? Except I have to source some rhd parts.....
