W58 vs. R154 Any major difference?

I have a 93 5-speed Hardtop, instead of going through the whole 6-speed swap again, very expensive I might add, I was thinking of a R154 and beefing it up. Well, I started thinking why dont I use my existing tranny (W58) and beef it up. Is there a big diffence between the two? Can you even beef up the W58 tranny? Do I need to do any modification to the driveshaft? I know with the R154 you need a front shaft from the MKIII and have the back custom made. How much could the W58 take? Boost Logic will rebuild the R154 and say to be able to handle up to 700 plus rwhp, I wonder if the W58 can do the same. Has anyone gone through the same thing? Please advise.

going through a 6spd swap again? what do you mean by again? you've already done the swap?

no real knowledge about the major similarities or differences..... but im going to have to say that no you cant beef up the w58 to hold that much power...if youve ever looked inside of a w58 and compared to to say a v160... you would see why these things dont have much... the gears and shafts are tiny.

as the r154... they were designed for a turbo car.... so they were meant to take a lot more abuse....

if you cant afford the 6spd swap i would just get the r154... dont bother trying ot build the w58... it will be a bunch of headaches, waste of time and money

^^^ what he said :)

here is the deal..... from wat i hear, the r154 can handle in excess of 700hp... it would cost around 1600 for the swap i bleive.... so here is my reasoning.... if im already putting down 450whp on a shity tune... meaning with a good tune and some 100 octane i'll be at 550-600whp... do i want to spend 1600 on a tranny that will be nearing its peak of hp when im probably gona make that in the next year or so...? my answer was no.... look at woons car... it held up just fine, didnt hear of him breaking it, 1400+ hp...
i found a 6spd for 500 bucks, with the rebuild and all the parts ( clutch slave cyilinder, driveshaft, flywheel, rebuilding 3rd gear, ect.) my total was under 3 thousand dollars....... so for less then double the price of the r154 conversion i got an entire 6spd conversion minus the TT rear end.....

as for the rear end i have yet to hear of its limits or when they start breaking.... seems like that would be the next weakest link followed by the axles b/c i realy dont see you snaping axles unless you are running slicks....

the r154 would be a great option if you planing on staying bellow 600hp and want a reliable tranny.... thats just my .02...

Yeah clutch options kinda suck. Though there is a certain clutch out there that can handle big power levels for the 7M, they arent a forum sponsor tho. I'm running similar on my NA-T project :)
