Car won't start just clicks

I was driving home and stopped to get some air in my tires and when i tried to turn my car back on the engine sounded like it was gonna start, then it just stopped and started clicking. Every time i tried again, there would gradually be less of the engine involved, and eventually it was only clicking. I called a friend to come boost me, with no luck, still all clicking. I just left my car there because I didn't know what else to do. I've read that it could be the solenoid, starter, plunger?, connectors, wires, or the battery terminals. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a way to temporarily start the car directly from the battery so i can at least get my car home? (the battery gauge was still at 15V) thanks

If it was the started, most likely it would not be making any noise at all. I would check the battery and the alternator as well first. From there, you would have to start checking ignition system.

I'm surpised I do not see more threads like this on SF. Not that this is your problem.

My car started doing the exact same thing about 2 years go. It was very random. Then it just got to the point where I was so annoyed I changed the starter. Problem kept happening. So is swapped it out with another known good starter. Same problem STILL. So I just added a push button starter that is directly hooked to the battery and starter. Has worked perfectly every since.

I have two other friends in the area whom have had the exact same problem. There must be a relay somewhere in the ignition that starts to go out. If anyone knows what relay it may be please let us know what you have found.

the clicking is nothing more than the relay in the passenger door/side of the engine, and the starter solenoid. not enough power is getting through the power wire to the solenoid to actually engage the starter, but theres enough to make it move and click...and also power the interior lights and everything else.

that wire, and the ground wires going to the starter and block, go to crap over 20 years, and the resistance values go up. if you wait 30 mins to an hour, it will start up again, which is what ive always done. you have a few options though...replace all those wires, run new wires and keep the old ones on there just because you can, or set up a starter relay that will draw its own power (through a brand new 12 gauge wire that youll run), and send THAT to the starter. im going the third route in a week or two, i just gotta get underneath my car and do it.

edit: god dang it, i knew there was a thread on it somewhere. when i first had my problem i got referenced to this thread: http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124724&page=3

My car does the exact same thing, but you can hear a clicking sound behind the glove box on the pass side, and I think there is a relay back there by the ECU that may be going bad. I had the same issue in my 86.5 too. but both starters are good. Time to replace a few wires, and the relays too. Nothing to hard, but kinda needs to be done.

Yeah it's not the battery. If it was you'll only hear one click. If it's a bad starter then you'll hear i click over and over. You can tap the starter with a hammer or something to get it going while you wait to change it out. alternator issues come into play if your car just dies while driving. your car wouldve drained the battery if the alternator was bad.

seriously! As said above, someone replaced their starter and had exactly the same thing.

Add a relay to your starter wire.

What happens if you replace the starter does the problem come back again eventually?

Mine doesn't start but it clicks and when the old battery was jumped it started right up.So its either time to buy a red top or yellow top or replace the starter and see what happens.
