Hello everyone! New to supra forums and i'm guessing that i'll find a sensible solution/advice to my queries!

OK ... I have a 1975 Toyota Mark II (also known as the corona). Recently I put in a 2jz-ge vvti engine in it. The power is smooth and explosive since the car weighs only 2700 lbs, vvti kicks in beautiful - feels like a mini turbo, to put it in perspective i beat a 350z, 2nd gear roll on to 4th gear till we hit traffic!!! and its' awesome on fuel. Iv'e got land cruiser shocks in the front and a cressida dif at the rear.

Now, the other day I came across the computer while i was fixing the carpet and noticed it was that of a 1jz!!!!! I called the mechanic and he said the 1jz computer actually runs better on the 2 jz engine, since you get better revs, quicker throttle response and you better fuel economy.

Any input on the computer swap?? Does anyone out there have a 2jz running on a 1jz computer?? Appreciate any input!! Thanks!

Wait... Am I reading this right? You have a VVT-i 2JZ-GE which is non turbo with a 1JZ-GTE VVT-i ECU?
I don't recal ever seeing a 1JZ-GE VVT-i but I might be wrong.

Yup, there is a VVTi non-turbo 2J engine

As far as the ECU swap....doesn't seem like a good idea to me. I would guess that you would get better fuel economy because obviously the ECU is putting less fuel in, but under WOT or heavier throttle you are probably running your engine lean. Meaning it may only be a matter of time before...BOOM!!!!

I know that there is a non turbo VVT-i 2JZ-GE motor. I have 2 VVT-i 2JZ-GTE's in my 2 supra's and am fairly well versed in the VVT-i system...

And what Ryan said is what I was thinking from the start but I had to re-read what was said by the OP which is why I posed the question.
I don't recall their being a ONE JZ-GE VVT-i or a 1JZ-GE VVT-i or the non turbo 1jz with vvt-i

I find it very hard to believe that any 1JZ-GE ECU would run better on a 2JZ than the 2JZ's native ECU.

The only thing I can think of that might be better, would be a slightly higher rev limiter. Everything else would be inferior. The mapping would assume smaller injectors and an inferior cylinder head.

This is all hypothetical, of course. I've never seen a 1JZ-GE in person since the US never got the 1JZ, and importers only offer the 1JZ-GTE since the turbo flavor is the only one worth swapping to.

Thanks for the input guys ..... @Ryan - yea i think that makes sense, cuz i occasionally do smell fuel when i floor it ...... I think i need to swap the computer with a 2jz one - it's the only way i'll know which one runs better!! And you guys are right i never thought about this but the 1jz i don't think came with a vvt!! Thanx a mill .... it's back to the chop shop!

@ Ryeno - Honda has vtec and toyota has vvt ..... i personally feel that toyota's vvt has a better kick to it than the honda vtec, and the vvt kicks in around 3200rpm or 3500rpm!

You need to do your homework. You don't seem to understand anything about these motors or how they work. They made more than one type of 1JZ.
This is a 1JZ GTE VVTi

This is a standard 1JZ GTE

This is a 1JZ GE (Non Turbo)

As you know there is also:
2JZ GE
2JZ GTE
2JZ GTE VVTi

As far as VTEC. VVTi is NOTHING like VTEC. They are two different things. VTEC is an on/off thing where it alters valve duration, where as VVTi alters cam timing over the whole rpm. You will not feel VVTi 'kick in' like vtec.

watch these education videos.

like i said, vvti doesnt kick in like vtec

But problem solved ... i'll replace the 1jz compu with the 2jz one ... the obvious solution! Thanx
i think you should do more research. some of the 2jz vvt-i ecus have immobilizers built in and different ecus have different pinouts and even pin connectors.

Mike Urbano made me run a 1jz HKS Fcon then stock 1jz ecu on my 2jzgte back in 2005. Ran fine for 2 years, then decided to put a 2j gforce ecu on with brand new 2j harness in '07. :)

You're going to confuse him lol

Interesting!!! So the 1jz ecu ran fine with the 2jz engine!! did he tell you why he made you do that?? i mean why not do the obvious of harnessing a 2jz ecu with a 2jz engine!
No, you need to re-read what he wrote. He was using a HKS Fcon computer(it is a universal computer) to control the engine. The stock 1zj computer was only controlling things like the a/c cruise control, and possibly the idle.
