1JZ Starter issue??

Hey all,
I just bought the car and I'm having troubles starting it. When i turn the key i hear a faint click and then nothing. I can turn the key multiple times and i get nothing. Then i come back 5 min later, turn the key and viola it turns on. It sounds like the starter is going but heres the thing. Whenever I get it boosted cause it could be the battery, it starts right up. I'm so confused...is it the battery or the starter? If the battery was dead, then why would it randomly work after X amount of tries? At the same time, if the starter is dead, then why does it start right up with no issues when i get another car to boost me? If it is the starter, will the starter out of my other NA 87' 7M fit and do the trick? The 1JZ is also in an 87' NA shell. Thanks for the help.

It's a combination; starter is going and needs a certain minimum amount of current to operate the starterrelay. Your battery is probably not capable anymore to supply that amount of current. Put in a new battery and you'll be good for some time, but you can expect the problem to show up later on.
If the 7m starter works I wouldn't know, I do think a 2jz starter fits.
the starter from the 7mgte works fine. Get the newer 7M started that is already threaded like the 91 and 92 models.

You should first have your alternator, battery and starter checked at the auto parts store before replacing any of them. Any auto parts store should be able to do this for free.

If the battery is weak and only charging at high rpms, it could be due to your alternator not working properly or about to go out. Best to test each one before replacement.
bad starter, the windings on the starter motor are old. replace with a new one or get it rebuilt.
So what is the difference between the '87 7M NA starter and an '89+ starter. Cause i have an '87 parts car sittin at home but it sounds like that starter wouldn't work? Y not and where can i find an '89+ starter besides the forums?

Starter will work. The problem is the 89 + starters mounting tabs are already threaded so it is a lot easier when isntalling it. The earlier models were not threaded so you would need a bolt and nut...and that is a PIA.
