After much asking around and trips to my local Toyota dealer i managed to get enough info to give the old girl a service .. i checked everything .. plugs....leads..dizzy cap and rotor arm and everything was fine....the only thing i found at fault was the front pads needed replacing and the airfilter (foam type?) had completely dissintegrated and might aswell have not been in there...... tomorrow im going to source a replacement .. the local dealer seems to think that the MA-70 filter is the correct one and is this the probable cause of my poo fule consumption(15mpg) ?
Is this just coincidence or should i be looking somwhere else?

Look at your fuel filter and your spark plugs along with wires.

a clogged filter will hinder your mpg but not one that has gaing holes in it. I'd be looking everywhere...

i hope this doesnt sound too thick but where is the o2 sensor ..exhaust manifold?..how easy is it to replace... does it have to be an exact replacement..or are there after-market ones?..and what does the throw codes mean?

I'm sorry I'm not very familiar with the 1g engine, but the o2 sensor would be the only sensor on the exhaust piping. It probably is on the exhaust manifold.

Once you find the o2 sensor, see if there is a flange that has two nuts holding it on, or whether you unthread the sensor itself. If the sensor unthreads, then you can go to an autoparts store and get a generic o2 sensor and cut/splice the wire(s) (there will either be 1 or 3 wires). If it is bolted with a flange, then you probably have to go through toyota

I say the 02 sensor also. You might want to check out the cats too, if that series of engine has them. Clogged exhaust will do hell to your gas mileage.
