Rumored for quite a few years now, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster three-door coupe has made its world debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. With an exterior design inspired by a high-performance sport bike, the new Veloster is a sporty coupe that delivers an impressive 40 mpg and the same functionality as any hatchback coupe out there.

The 2012 Veloster is powered by an all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). Delivering an impressive 138 HP, the engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an all-new, six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). What’s mpressive about the Veloster is not only the 40 mpg fuel economy, but also its specific output: 86.3 HP per liter, better than any of its competitors.

For anyone that has been waiting for the new Veloster for a long time, the wait was definitely worth it. The equipment list will include technologies that will make the car more fun to drive than any other on the market.

In my opinion, it has the makings of a great car EXCEPT the go-kart motor under the hood. Sport suspension and a 6-speed manual or dual-clutch auto with paddle shifters? I would be absolutely sold if hey offered it with their 2.0T. In recent years I've been softening up to the Korean cars but this one almost sold it for me. I was extremely disappointed to hear about the engine and power numbers they're offering. I just couldn't see myself rowing through a 6-speed or slapping some quick-shifting paddles when I'm being pulled along by a measly 138bhp. Seriously, 2.0T in this bitch and I'd look into getting one tomorrow. It would be essentially be a budget-GTI.

I've highlighted the confusing parts:

I don't know what it's calling its competitors, but the smallest engine offered in the Chevy Cruze is a 1.4L making the same power - 38hp - and it's not impressive there, either. More fun to drive than any other car on the market? I think at a certain point, opinions can simply be false advertising.

Still not sold on it, even with the turbo engine. I actually like the quirky styling, but so does every teen/college age girl I've talked to :stickpoke This thing is going to become the Miata of small hatchbacks, mark my words. Women love this thing. They would need to change a lot of things about it (including upping the power even more, adding AWD, and making it look more brutish) before I could buy one without questioning my manhood.

It's not a 1.3L turbo, it's a 1.6L turbo (201 HP)

I have seen about 7 or 8 of these things on the road (non turbos) and they are pretty nice looking. Would be a very practical DD.

My wife thinks it looks like something an older mother would drive.

There is something about a woman's insight that is not only confusing but something that cannot be ignored.
FWIW the ones I have seen on the road were mostly driven by "older" people. So I wondered about demographics and did a search and found this:

Considering that older people don't surf forums as much this was very telling.
