New here from TX. I own a 2jz swapped rx8. It's been an interesting journey building this car and I'm here to learn more about the jz platform. My first experience was putting my brother's 1jz s14 together back in 2009. I originally bought this vvti setup around the same time with plans to swap my daily is300. Life put that on the back burner for nearly a decade. My brother found this 09 Rx8 R3 with a blown rotary of course, in his neighborhood. The question of it the 2j would fit came up and the rest is history since 2020

Thanks for the welcome and likes. Unfortunately I think I popped one of the twins(jdm ceramics) so I'm looking to go single. My brothers 1j has a t3 6262 setup that's fun but I'm looking at the pte 6266 setup. My issue is manifolds. Frame rails are tighter than a supra so I might be limited to a lot style. Currently looking at the PHR kit

If you like the sequential twin set up or would like to explore that option further. Jdm twin rebuilds by BNR is a worthy look and had a higher top end. Stu Hagen the sequential twin king here had done gt28R hybrid twins making 600-800RWHP. Do look into it if interested.

NIIIIIICE!

Are you on a stock ECU or a standalone? Looks kinda like a post-turbo stock AFM setup from the engine bay pic but it's hard to tell.

If you're on a stock ECU I'd definitely stick with a smaller turbo like the 6262 or even a 5558 CEA. You're limited by injector to ~400whp or so and there's basically no way to retune the stock ECU.

The PHR kit is fantastic but the fitment is 100% for a Supra so if you went with a PHR kit you'd be hacking up a ton of the value just making it fit. I'd recommend a simple Rev9 chinese cast T4 manifold that's a $150-200 part on fleabay most of the time. Plan on doing some port matching work and opening up the wastegate port, and get it ceramic coated. Then go for a smaller T4 flanged turbo of your choice and fabricate the rest of what you need from there.

So I'm running an ECU master emublack standalone. My fitment issue is how far away from the block aftermarket manifold will place the turbo. The street torque manifold I'm pretty sure will clear my strut tower and frame rail. I've only seen one or two other cars like mine with tubular manifolds and they seem to clear as long as the wastegate tube comes out the side instead of the center. Upgrading to larger injectors is fine I'm just not sure what size to go for as I'm only looking for 500-550 whp because I don't want to change a lot of stuff in the drivetrain also e85 isn't readily available in my area yet. I'm running an r154 and the OEM rear diff is a 4.77 so I'm shifting damn near to 3rd cross a street lol. Feels like I'm driving an s2000. I have a Ford explorer 8.8 I'm gonna swap in to maybe a 3.9 or 3.73 gear.

Good stuff! The EMU black is fantastic.

Virtually all of the fleabay cast 2JZ-GTE manifolds, including the Rev9, are basically a chineseum copy of the same original Turbonetics pattern manifold that PHR used to model their street torque manifold. If you're handy with a dremel and willing to do some port matching and casting cleanup the $100-150 chinesium options are surprisingly not bad. Just need to port out the WG area a good bit and use one of those V-band conversion flanges to put a 44-45mm gate on it and you're good to go. Ceramic coating the manifold is highly recommended if you're worried about engine bay heat.

I'd love to see PHR make some money because they make a lot of awesome stuff for the Supra, but again, I just don't see the value being there for you since you're going to chop up most of that kit to fit it into an RX8, and the real value of PHR parts is the flawless out-of-the-box fitment.

Very good point. I've seen those manifolds on Amazon actually and wondered about them. I figured everyone was copying the same log manifold anyway. I can definitely dremel out things lol. Rather save the funds and go DBB on the turbo lol. Oil lines aren't a big deal and my intercooler pipes will definitely be different. Atleast with a signal turbo I won't have nearly the issues with heater core and ac lines on my firewall anymore.

I assume I blew a turbo because my front turbo has oil all over the compressor housing and as soon as I hit boost it becomes a mosquito truck lol. I was planning to run the stock twins till something like this happens and go single. Just wish I could have waited a few more months because I'm in the process of a full repaint/body work of the car. So I guess now I'm just gonna pull the engine and go single and refresh a bunch of stuff.

So far I love the emublack and I actually bought it because the stock aristo ECU was giving me hell with the standard transmission and the Toyota pseudo dbw just never quite worked right. With the emublack I'm able to use the Mazda dbw setup. I'm also running a piggy back module that makes all my gauges work like factory as well. The emublack probably could have done it but I couldn't figure it out lol.

few random pics of things such as the power steering bypass pulley I had to run in order to run air conditioning. The rx8 uses electric steering and the jz platform can't run an ac compressor without a power steering pump. The only solution I could find was a company out of Georgia call heat lightning speed shop that makes a bypass pulley. In the background one of my lifetime projects, an FC rx7 convertible. Also have my brother's s14 with a 6262 1jz and another s13 convertible lol.

Having sold my 500-600 horsepower rx8 a year+ ago with a bridge-ported REW, the handling of the car is phenomenal. The transmission and drivetrain simply could not keep up, and I was not looking to spend 10K on a T56 swap. I think there is more room over there than you think, you might just have to get creative with the turbo manifold.

I was able to make this monstrosity fit between the passenger side framerail and motor. I later upgraded to a 3.5" down-pipe with a S369SXE and it fit.

So I found a video on YouTube of some kid with a tubular manifolds and his issue was the wastegate routing. Something that kicks out the side seems like it would work.

Mainly stripping 3rd gear in the FD transmission. I also could not launch the car without insane wheelhop. The axles and rear end actually held together well.

Ill post one of my 1/4 mile runs.

This was on the smaller S362SXE with a 3" exhaust.

This was a typical run where I would wheel hop like hell out of the hole. On this pass, I blew off my main vacuum line and lost all power after the 1/8th mile and the car laid over. I just don't think it was a good choice for a drag car :(. I was reeling in the Dodge Charger until I lost all boost pressure. I blew third gear again not long after this... Trapped 97 mph on the 1/8th mile before losing power.

My buddy who fabricated the mounts for my setup is a rotary diehard so it hurt his heart to help with my setup but money talks lol. Anywho he has an FD with a similar setup and he kept blowing third gear also. He blames it on the tweaking of the PPF under never before seen torque numbers 😂

Fantastic build man. You never know what will pop up next on this forum. Not too many RX8s out there in the first place and I bet you have the only 2JZ swapped RX8 in the country. Got to hand you the trophy for creative vision and the unique build category. Keep the good stuff coming.

Ha, idk about the only one as I've seen a few others but none finished that I know of in the states. They're big in Russia of all places which is where I got a lot of the knowledge of how to make it work. The rx8 has been a heavily over looked chassis and believe or not are out there everywhere in great condition because the rotary motors blow up before people can ever trash the cars too bad.

K series swaps where hot in these things during covid but you have to cut your wiper cowl/firewall which I wasn't thrilled about. The jz just overall fits better and the rx8 itself is 100lbs less than an mk4.

I will say most crazy swapped rx8s I've seen are usually shop built and impractical. I don't know of any with full interior, ac and factory working gauges. Honestly this thing operates like a new off the pot car all done in my garage from alot of late nights and beer drinking. No how to's or easy answers for any of it. It's been quite the learning experience even after 20 years of car building.

Neat fact it's somehow one of few chassis that mustang coyote motors fit in... Lol

Honestly it's the perfect chassis for a jz engine. Unlike the FC or FD you don't need a cowl hood or subframe spacers. You can run a rear sump supra oil pan which I prefer. I can run stock oil pan with plenty of room to even run the OEM metal undershields to protect it from road hazards. No firewall mods or trans cutting.

Soo upon further review of my turbo situation. Just took some of the piping apart and saw interesting things.

Ihave oil coming from the charge pipe of the rear turbo. Cant see or really touch the compressor wheel since it's right up against the firewall

Front turbo has oil all over the compressor housing for reasons I can't figure out but always has. Just never this bad.

Intake crossover pipe couplers have some very odd deformation. Brothers 1j did this also on his factory twins.
