There's a metal plate that locks reverse shifting. Some people turn that plate around to disable the lock. Just remove the plastic cover and turn the plate around.

ihave a 97 tt, and i am able to go in reverse w/out lifting/pulling lever. ibelieve something is wrong.is something broken lose ect?

very odd with an oem shifter...seen it before on the b&m though.....check that plate for sure...maybe your tripod bushings could be shot as well, a stretch, but possible....
If you cant figure it out take a picture of your shifter area and we can tell you if it looks right. Probably that plates either gone or turned the wrong way. Easy fix..4, 10 mm bolts..
checked today the plate is on correctly arrows face to front of car
