Hey guys, do you knowif the dowel pins are required for assembly of the new head gasket?

Toyota Dealer can get em.

If you have a local Engine shop they probably have some that will fit but you need a sample for sizing.

This feels dumb but.... what dowel pins are you talking about? Ones that stick in the block to line up the hg with the oil passages and such?

Ah... didn't think they were replaceable (well, never thought about it anyway), but it makes sense that they are. I suppose if they're really worn out, it could seat the gasket askew and block off an oil passage. Definitely not good.

IJ, you've gotta be the most involved and helpful "grumpy old man" on this forum, lol

It's not that the pins wear, it's that the machine shop will remove them upon milling the block deck surface. Some shops will lose them or destroy them removing them.

The gasket will move quite a bit with just the head studs positioning it. The pin to gasket clearance is much tighter and does a good job of positioning the gasket.

yep, if ya don't use the dowels then 3-7000kms later the head gasket goes poof! had a mate that rebuilt his engine just recently and did that tsk tsk lol

Toyota sells them for 2 bucks each. You will ned 2
