car starting knock on the way home the other day, knock is only present at idle/low rpms. about 1700 or so the knock goes away.

sounds like a valve is screwed up. Have someone check the lash.

It does sound like a valve problem.

You could use a better word since calling that "knock" is confusing/misleading; knock is typically associated with a combustion problem, e.g. from inadequate octane.

I'm pretty sure that sounds like a rod knock...but just to be on the safe side I would start by removing the valve covers and make sure none of the valve shims popped out of place or the cam gear isn't loose.

I agree, it sounds like rod knock. Easiest way is to pull coil clips one at a time and see which cyl makes the noise change pitch.
