How do you start diagnosing the ABS system if you get a ABS light?

They generally have a scan tool specifically for ABS systems. I'd call around and see if someone can scan it to see the code and go from there. Sometimes they can come on just from fluid being low (I'm sure you've already checked that though)

I cant remember if autozone will/can scan that for free.

Is the ABS light supposed to come on if the brake fluid level is low? If so, then I wonder if the brake fluid level sensor might be bad as I assume you have already checked the brake fluid level?

You need a Toyota scantool,parts store scantools only scan OBD2 engine codes,not ABS.

You can jump terminals Tc and E1 on either the underhood connector (DLC1) or the round connector under the dash (DLC2) to read the codes. The directions start on page 3 of this pdf http://www.97supraturbo.com/1997 Service Manual/Diagnostics-Other.pdf
