There are different part numbers for pre-89 and 89+, not sure what the difference is.

86-88 was called esc, 89-92 was then called abs

the abs units do look different, i believe just looks, possibly work identical

i know someone that has 89+ abs so i'll grab a pic :)

They're called both ESC and ABS in various places on both pre-89 and 89+ in the parts catalog. On the cars (here at least) it was just called ABS.

ahh k... hmm maybe japan was lazy and didn't bother changing yours ;)

I know the master cylinders are different don't know about the abs unit.
