OK guys, im kinda lost here. Im thinking of upgrading my Engine mangement system but dont know weather I should go with either an AEM Gen2 or motec or Pro EFI. I read and read and see many good things about each unit but also hear bad things about them. The AEM I can get a very good price in it ( that was my first choice) but then kinda lean towards the Pro EFI and Motec now. For the Motec, there is either the M48 or M800. Please chime in some thoughts.

The motec is an excellent unit but you can get so much more included with a ProEFI without dropping an ungodly amount on extras. Learned fuel trim and idle control. AWESOME traction control and OEM type knock control. VE fuel mapping (once map is set you just tell it the desired AF). And excellent customer service. Kind of a no brainer unless you have endless funds.

Any EMS is only as good as the tuner that sets it up.

So the real question is, which EMS do the tuners that are close to you, know? That will probably dictate your decision even above and beyond price.

figgie makes an excellent point. Investing in a tuner is not the place to skim on cash.

If it doesn't work out right, the tuner can always make excuses and reasons (valid or not, that's another issue) about the EMS you got. Same goes for all other parts you will be using for car car / engine (engine internals, valvetrain, brakes, wheels, suspension etc).

I had a Motec M800 in my car before. I'm still convinced it is the best system out there BUT no one could, at that point in time a couple of years back, tune it properly to idle right in traffic and other mundane, ordinary stuff. I'm sure if I were in the US, John Reed, Justn Nenni and other big-name specialist celebrity star tuner could have sorted it out with time and of course money. Sadly, I'm not there and nobody here could do it. It ran fine at WOT and a fast cruise, but traffic driving was so very bad. ANd it wasn't even making a whole lot of power then (600whp on pump)

I thought MoTeC had a specialist group of tuners with whom they trained, or maybe something of the sort?

Well, im getting ready to blow some money again. Just to clear things up for me and others. AEM only have slight software/tuning software problems? Not physical electrical problems? I like the Motec but damn its so priced up there. As for the Pro-efi 128, its in the middle. The AEM V2 is cheapest in price and my local distribution warehouse have plenty in stock. If the AEM V2 dont have any problems electrically, then I might consider going AEM. If it has problems, then its Pro-Efi 128.

Kind of the opposite IMHO. Especially the Gen1 box. Some people have run 10s of thousands of miles with 0 problems, others have problems within a month of getting them with those Freaking Eprom chips.

Damn, Anyone with Gen 2 can chime in on theirs beside tuning software probs. I read that the Gen 2 idles way better then Gen 1 versions.

My understanding with the ProEFI is that you can run the internal, or an external Wideband. Your not locked to the internal wideband if you already have one.

Pro EFI all the way. My friends car runs amazing on it. so many great features at a great price. CAN guage is awesome displays any setting that you have the senors for. It's not very fancy but it does the job and shows almost every parameter on the engine. And Traction Control!
