Andi PLEASE HELP!!!

1372 Views 20 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Spool
When I go WOT and running 18 psi to 22 psi my car pings pretty badly. I am in California and can only get 91 at the pump....I know this is probably part of my problem. My mods are listed below. My car is 94 TT 6spd with 67k and was bone stock up til 65k. Plugs are a month old and gapped at 032.
Do you think a new oxygen sensor and coil packs would help???

Hey ANDI, how do you get over 450 rwhp on your car without pinging??? Or does your car ping???

Also, sometimes my car will cut out and pop under wot in 1st gear only?

PLEASE ANYONE HELP !!!!!!!!!

Thanks for any help!

Is this pinging occuring at all times...even when the car is being run hard just after coming up to full operating temps? I live in CA as well and have noticed a bit of ping after sitting in freeway traffic on a hot day and then accelerating out of it.

On moderate temp days, not too bad. But I'll have to tell you, this gas here sucks big time! Do not use Arco...go with mobil or 76 or other well know brand.

I use a bottle of Torco additive and may try the Moroso additive at some point to bump up the octane rating a bit. This seems to make the car pull much harder and eliminate ping during hot temps.

I have the 6097's gapped down to .0315.

Not sure if it's an O2 or other issue...this is all I can speak to from my experience.

If your car continues to ping steady, after the first sound of it, you may have other issues. The knock sensor should detect this and retard timing immediately so it doesn't continue.

I'm sure someone else may have a few more ideas. Until then, keep the boost down...ping can be deadly!

Thanks Spool!

Anyone else???

You're running way too much boost for 91 octane gas, simple as that.

Either turn the boost down to 15~16 psi (you *might* not ping at this level), or resign yourself to using Torco, as recommended by Maury, or you can do like I do and run at least 50/50 Union 76 100 octane unleaded mixed with 91 octane.

O2 sensor and coil packs will not make any real difference.

When I run realy good 91 octan I'm only able to hold max 17,5 psi, but when I get bad 91 octan there are only 16 psi possible
with our 95 octan here in switzerland I'm able to go up to 22,5 psi at max without piping. but you need defently the right plug with the right cap.

I'm going to take Chip's advice on this very soon and start using 100/91 mixture. There is a 76 up on the corner of Imperial Hwy/Yorba Linda Blvd. with 100 octane. However, the cost of 100 is $4.20 a gallon...the torco is $8.95 a bottle and when mixed with 10 gallons will yield 104 octane (as per the bottle).

This would most likely be better than the torco stuff. I have a friend that uses the Moroso all the time in his LS1 Z28...he says it works great and has stopped the pinging for him (non boosted car though).
What cap are you referring to?

currently I use the denso iridium, a realy nice good plug, sometimes in the summertime I use the 3330, because it is a little bit colder in the same temp range than all the others, but generaly I don't like coper plugs. capped at 0.315 up to 0.32

Oh...okay, we call it "GAP" over here in the US.

Good to know you weren't talking about a distributor cap...we don't have them on the 2JZGTE!
G
LOL, your right, sorry. I have to take some english lesson.
Try to find a superman cap perhaps your car will have 100rwhp more than before without cap....LOL

91 octane fuel? I'd not run more than 17psi on that.... I run 19psi tops here on 93 octane, and still occasionally get timing retard... I can't hear it but I can see it in higher EGT's.

My dynos were on a mix of race gas and pump gas, with an average octane of about 98.

Andi
Thanks everyone!

Spool....where do I get the torco additive?
How about the moroso additive?
Where can I get 100 octane up in the Sacramento area.?
We have 76 stations up here but none that I have found offer 100

Is the 100 pump stuff better than 91 with torco or moroso?

Spool, what gas / mixture did you run on your dyno???

Not sure if this has anything to do with it but... Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe Andi also has a GReddy 3 row FMIC that added roughly 40 rwhp... I also have the GReddy 3 row FMIC, and I run 21#'s without pinging. Ran only 17#'s prior to the FMIC.
While we are on the topic of octane rating, what benefit if any does an basicall stock ttsupra derive from higher octane? Where I live I can purchase 110 Octane for $4.50 a gallon and 115 Octane for $5.00 a gallon (Phillips 66 Race gas B-32, and B-33). Would it be worth it for hp or timing at track events?

Anything more than 104 unleaded is wasted in a car still running stock twins, no matter how many +'s.

If you can get 100~104 octane unleaded use it, mixed 50/50 or more with pump premium. You might want to run straight 100 octane if you are running high boost at sea level.
Lance from the main list reported less pinging on CA piss-gas from running a higher coolant to water ratio and using the higher pressure TRD radiator cap.

Also, don't let the car keep pinging like that. You'll only damage the motor.

Lance has a nearly stock Supra. His only mods are a BCC in the ECU, and a hole drilled in the VSV to allow higher boost (~16 psi). Still on stock exhaust w/stock cats. Thus his peak cylinder pressures are lower than a full BPU cars since he is moving less air through the motor.

I have the same cooling system mods as Lance, and on a full BPU car they won't help much if you're trying to run over 16 psi on Cali gas. They do help a lower boost levels.

Chip turned me on to 100 octane from 76 I never boost over 16psi without it , Or i get pinging.

Where did you buy Torco for $8.95? Directly from the manufacturer, it's $11.95.
