Antenna issues in my 94TT

I've installed a JVC KDSH-99 Head Unit in my 94 TT, and everything is working great except for the power antenna. It ceases to move up at all when the unit is on, or put into Tuner mode. I've checked and double checked the wiring from other posts on this forum. From what I can tell, the Blue/White wire from the JVC unit should connect to both the Black/Red and Pink/Blue wires on the Toyota harness.

The JVC to Universal and Universal to Toyota wiring harnesses I am using are connecting all the appropriate wires to make the antenna function, still no go.

Last night, out of curiosity, I reconnected the factory Head Unit to verify that the antenna was still working. I connected the harness, the black antenna lead, and a smaller gray wire to the headunit and everything works.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what that gray wire is? Its a gray wire that looks like the black antenna lead, but a tad smaller. It plugs into the factory head unit right next to the antenna lead. Is this somehow related to the antenna, or the factory amp?

If anyone can help shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Rich

The grey wire is another antenna thats in the rear window. As far as your power antenna goes, did you use a wire harness on it or did you hard wire the JVC?

Thanks for the response, GATTA.

So there are 2 antennas, is the power antenna for FM reception and the rear window antenna for AM?

I am using the 2 wire harnesses I have, a JVC to universal connector, then a universal to toyota harness. The JVC harness has a short jumper wire that loops around and connects the Blue/White wire to both the Black/Red and Pink/Blue on the toyota harness, so all 3 should be connected when the harness is snapped in.

Just a few thoughts, if I get the antenna working, will it have the same behavior as the factory head unit: The power antenna only goes up when AM/FM is the source - not when CD/MP3/AUX is the source, or will it come up everytime the head unit is powered?

If the antenna comes up all the time, could I use the grey wire for the antenna in the rear window and pick up some stations? All I really care about is getting 2 AM stations for news and traffic (mainly traffic reports, heh). All other times, I'm listening to audio or mp3 cds.

The antenna in the rear window is a AM/FM as well. They do this for better reception. Its actually called a diversity antenna, just a different way to get better reception. On the JVC radios the antenna will always be up when the radio is on. The only way to avoid this is to put a switch in or a radio with a seperate amp turn on and antenna wire. You can use the grey antenna wire for your antenna but it wont work quite as well as the power unit and you will have to put the larger end on it. If you are using a harness to plug directly into your cars harness your antenna should be working. Make sure that both blue wires are hooked up and that the output is acually working.
