I was wondering if the stock turbos are interchangable or if the #1 turbo can only go on the #1 side and the #2 turbo can only go on the #2 side? "Twin" turbo makes me think that they could be swapable, but does anyone know for a fact?
Thanks,
Tony

yeah i'm pretty sure they are. you just have to remove them from the exhaust housing and flip them backwards...my friend did that once.

They are NOT interchangeable. The #1 has a nipple on it for the wastegate hose. The #2 does NOT have it. I know this from experience. They are the same size however the #1 turbo can only go in the #1 turbo spot. The same goes for the #2.

I'm sure someone will try to say otherwise so here is a picture to illustrate what I said above. The turbo on the left is the #1 turbo and the nipple I was talking about is circled. Notice the turbo on the right (#2) does NOT have this nipple.

im sure you could swap the nipple..
Easier said then done. The only way I could see you pulling out the thing in the number two where the nipple should be is if you disassembled the turbo. You can not unscrew it. The threads point OUTWARDS as if it were screwed in from the inside of the turbo. The exhaust housing is in a different position as well. To even try to swap #1 for #2 you have to remove the c-clamp that holds the turbo to the exhaust housing so you can swap the housings. So it may be possible to swap the turbos IF you swap the housings AND disassemble the turbos to swap the nipple. Hardly what I would call a swap. I've got a set of spares stored away somewhere I'll try to take a better pic so you can see better what I'm talking about.

Just swap the Housings, is not hard.

Yes they are. "I have done this too many times" The center sections are the same. You just have to take off the compressor snap ring on the housing then pull off the housing, and swap the center section. Here is a pic of the center section.

The turbos are NOT interchangeable without swapping the housings. I said that but swapping the housings defeats the purpose of just swapping out the turbos. You can not just put a #2 turbo in the #1 spot.

This was the original question.

Thanks for the input, guys. So it looks like I can use a #1 in the #2 spot...just need to swap housings.....easy enough.
Tony
Indeed however why not just put them in the correct spot it would be much faster and easier. The only reason I could see to put a #2 in a #1 spot is if you happen to have one spare turbo and its not the one you need.
