Benefit of rear wing for handling???

Hey guys,

I wish the search funcion worked so I wouldn't need to post this. My car is currently wingless as I installed a carbon fiber hatch last year to drop some weight for drag racing. This saved me around 35lbs over the rear of the car (not a good place to save weight) so to make up the difference I moved the battery to the rear passenger side.

Over the winter I did the 6-speed swap and also reinstalled my TT brakes and am getting into driving the car on twisty roads very spirited. I've also done full suspension-coilovers, TRD sway bars, Strut tie bars, etc, and have the CCW road race package with BFG tires-285/30/18 front, 315/35/17 rear.

I'd like to get all of handling out of the car that I can on street tires. While I do plan on doing the road race course at TX2K8 and perhaps some track days at Putnam in Indy, I am not turning the car into a road race car. I'll always run on street tires as well.

My question is would I see any benefit by reinstalling the stock decklid w/wing? Would the added downforce that the stock wing provides out weigh the increased weight? I can't seem to find how much downforce it provides at what speed, but I'd have to think that any downforce is good over the rear tires. Please let me know what you guys think.

Thanks in advance,

Steve K.

Steve,

The stock wing is rated approximately at 66 lbf @ 90MPH, and only weighing in at 6lbs., I would believe the added downforce would definitely out weigh the added weight of the stock wing.

edit: no pun intended :)
Thanks,

The stock hatch is approx 35lbs heavier then the carbon one so in fact I guess I'd actually be adding 100lbs of downforce at 90mph if I leave the battery in the back.

Thanks, anyone else?

Steve
I mis-read your original post, thinking you were going to keep the CF hatch on.

here's a good thread in regards to the RMM wing, not sure if you have seen this one:
