BPU Supra vs. Shelby Cobra with a 427 (Times Two!)

I was on my way home from work yesterday and took the long route in an area that has some nice long open stretches hoping I would encounter something. Well, I saw one of those Cobra kit cars going the other way so I made a u-turn. Unfortunately, this was toward the end of the area that had the long straights.

The car was silver with a badge on the front fender that said "427". The license plate frame said Shelby Cobra. The car was loud and sounded great.

The guy obviously saw me and he stopped short at a light so we could talk. I asked him how much power he made at the wheels and he said 385rwhp. He said he was real quick down low and didn't do quite as well at high speeds. I told him I had about 410 rwhp.

We tried to find a spot to do some pulls, but couldn't get two lanes open at the same time. So the first time he changed lanes in front of me and hammered it without notice. I did same but it took me a sec to get both turbos spooled. I stopped his pull at the top of 2nd gear and it looked like I just started to pull on him by the early part of 3rd gear but then we had to back off due to traffic. That was really the best run we had.

I think from a well staged 50 mph punch (2nd gear) with my car fully brake boosted it would have been dead even until I hit 3rd gear and then I would have started pulling away. I hit 20 psi in 3rd gear all the way to redline. I was running 100 octane fuel, so it's okay.

His car seemed so small compared to mine. How much do those Cobras weigh? My Supra must weigh a good 800 lbs more. Anyway, I was pleased with the outcome even though we didn't get a completely cllean run. My car traps 121 mph in the 1/4 mile, so the power is there.

He would have ripped me out of the hole though with my stock stall tc. Can't wait to go single.

One of my dad's friends has a 427 kit car... It weighs around 2700 lbs with driver I think... It runs 11.30s @ 127-128 mph, but he has some mods, not sure what though.. Put around 500hp at the wheels and high 400s in torque I believe, Im not 100% positive on the dyno numbers.

Definetly a nice kill, those cars can be tough.
Wow, good run. Those kit cars are usually worse than mustangs. You have NO IDEA what they are packing until you start to run them. The only one I ran up against turned out to be a big dissapointment. It was blue with white stripes, but it didn't have the big block sound to it. I was around 330rwhp at the time and left him pretty easily, so I imagine he did a SB chevy or maybe a 302/351windsor, really not sure. The 427s are definately monsters though.

Good run. :)
We had a guy come to an autocross with one of those cobras. Hillarity insued after we had to put all the cones back up.

I thought they handled pretty well. Maybe the kit cars are not as steady.

They do handle really well if you have a driver that can drive and dosen't give it to much gas in the corners. When you put a huge motor in a 2000 pound car, with a bad driver. THe rear end gets lighter then what it already is.
nice kill

A friend of mine built one of those Cobra kit cars. He used a 5.0 Explorer motor (w/ work done), and recently added twin turbos.

He hasn't yet taken it to the track with the turbos, but he was running low 13s before installing the turbos. He now has a hard time not spinning his tires even from a roll in 3rd gear. His next plans are to change his gears.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet.....
Nice Kill!

385RWHP out of a 427 is pathetic.

nice run. Those are fun cars.
Just had the pleasure of running another one of these this past Saturday. I was on the way to Home Depot and I see a red with white stripes Cobra replica. Got closer and it too had "427" badging on the front fenders with a Carroll Shelby Cobra license plate frame. I followed him until we hit a stop light and we got side by side. I gave him a thumbs up but didn't say anything. I powerbraked up and let it rip when the light went green. He didn't punch it so I roared away then slowed down (after all, it was a 35mph zone). I then tried to guess which way he would go since I was in front of him. I turned right onto a three lane highway and he followed. YES! He pulls up to me at about 40 mph and wants to run (the guy is late 40's to early 50's). I put it in 2nd gear and began brake boosting. We hit it about the same time and I pulled 1/2 through 2nd and then 3rd gear hit and I began to walk away. He shut it down early (about 90 mph). I slowed and he comes back up to my door and yells "I missed a gear". I said "Do you want to run again?" He nods. By this time we had slowed down to 20 mph (probably intentional on his part) and I put it in 1st gear and brake boosted. Again, we hit it about the same time. He gained a 1/4 car due to my tire spin, but when I shifted to 2nd I started to walk him. He again shut it down early (just as the tranny was shifting into 3rd) and popped a u-turn. Dang that was fun! I love this car!
