Buschur (or Blitz) FMIC Mounting Question

For those of you who jumped in on the Buschur FMIC blowout (and have installed it), how sturdy does the mounting system seem to be? Mine arrived yesterday, and I thought I was missing some parts when I couldn’t find any brackets in the box. A closer look showed that the IC is designed to attach directly to some existing body mounts on the top, but the bottom of the IC has nothing to attach a strengthening bracket to. I called Buschur and they said that there are top mounts only, that the piping supports the bottom. This seems kind of wimpy to me. All the other FMIC’s seem to have a side or bottom attachment point of some kind. I know they patterned this after the Blitz IC, does this one just use a top mounting system? It seems like having only top mounts would stress the IC (and car body) attachment points. Whats the consensus on this?

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,
Sorry that I can't answer your question, but just wanted to make a slight correction to your post. Buschur did NOT copy the Blitz FMIC. It was his frustration with the poor fitment of that kit that prompted him to make his own design. Therefore, I doubt any Blitz FMIC owners will be able to relate to your issue, either.

Out of curiousity, how much did this FMIC set you back? I'd also love to see any pics.

K,

You're right. I remember now about his complaints about the Blitz fitment. I bet the Blitz has a bottom mounting point though.

The kit cost me $1000, it has a really nice Spearco bar-and-plate core. Nice polished tubing too. It just seems to be lacking some small details like a bottom mount point. Maybe it isn't necessary but I just wouldn't feel comfortable hanging that big IC on just 2 top mounting points.

I'll be modifying/installing the IC this weekend, I plan to take pictures of the whole install. I'll try to get something up early next week.

That does seem pretty week as far as mounting goes... I have teh bigass TRUST and even with the bottom mounting one of my top mounts started splitting away from the car, they're pretty weak since they're just body sheat metal. BUT I took some of that generic exaust hanger strip with the holes in it and cut a piece to match and there's a stronger bolt just above the mounting point to ankor it. Worked pretty well for reenforcing the weak mounts...

You could also have someone weld an aluminum piece to the bottom of the IC for an additional mount braket before installing it...

The kind of problem you had is exactly what I am afraid of. The sheetmetel tabs that the IC attaches to are really only designed to attach the air deflector to the body, not support a 20# chunk of aluminum! I had planned to have a shop weld on a lower mounting tab or 2, I’ll look into reinforcing the top mounts like you did - good suggestion.

Thanks,

Bob
please post pics of this fmic !
The Blitz FMIC uses 2 top mounting points and 1 on the bottom in the center. The piping does seem to be used to stabilize the big unit in place. The bottom attach point does little more than locate the FMIC in the proper fore/aft position. No problems to date, (5 months). The blitz kit also included brackets to relocate ac lines to clear some piping at the bottom drivers side just before it turns up toward the throttle body. Be careful around these lines, or you will end up with a leak in the ac system. They were a PITA for me.

Hmm... that doesn't look any different than the insides of my supposedly tube-and-fin-style Greddy FMIC?

How about the trick upside-down writing on mine? I hear that is good for at least 20HP! Seriously, they do look pretty similar, the only difference might be in the style of the "tubes", the Spearco core has square "tubes".

BTW, how do you get the photos to display in the message, mine always show up as attachments?

I copied the URL of your attachment and then pasted used the VBCode IMG tag around it....
