C5 like front bumper turn signal mod

1854 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Wilks
Does anyone know the mkiv electrical system well enought to have the front turn signals on 93-96 MKIVs to come on with the parking lights [remain constantly on], and when you use the turn signal, the correct light would flash?

Sorta like the contant ambers on the C5s....

Just wonderin'

I could probly figure it out but I think it would involve some "riggin" and would probly also look kinda funny. I took out the little driving light bulbs in the 97-98 blinkers and the side blinker bulbs but still want something to flash in the front of the car when I hit the lock/unlock button. I'm tryin to figure something out for it and I think it probly involves some of the same stuff so I'll let you know how it works.
brad,
yah I mentioned 93-96 turn signals cause I dunno what the clear 97-98 lights would look like solid...I couldn't find any electrical stuff on the mkiv do you have anything???

I'm sure the mod could be done in theory to any car, so posting on a electrical engineering forum would help us :)

i have this done on my Accord. I'll try and find the schematic for it, i got the schematic off the net, and took it to a stero shop, and they did it easily.
Yeah it is not to hard, I did it on my friends prelude and am getting ready to do it today when my 97 turnsignals come in....YEAH. But what you need are 4 5-pole SPDT relays. I know Bosch makes some. I got mine from car toys or you can order them from radioshack.com but they don't carry them in the stores. If you do order from radioshack get the sockets that fit the relays too...makes installing them alot easier. There is one thing that is unavoidable when doing this though....No matter how you set it up, when you have your headlights on and turn on the blinker, it will hyperblink because of the added current draw of the relays on the blinker. Kinda looks nice if you ask me though.

Now into the wiring. I don't have the exact schematics infront of me because I am at school, but I have them at home. You will need two relays for each side of the car. Get yourself plenty of wire and twist ties or crimp wire connectors. You will cut the positive wire of both the sidemarker and turn signal. crimp on some wire to both leads of each wire to extend them to the spot where you want to install the relays. I am not going to go any further right now cuz i don't want to make a mistake, but when I get back home I will dig up the schematics and give you a step by step install of the whole thing. The first side will probably take two hours but the second side, once you get the hang of it will only take an hour (if that).. I will also post some instruction on how to wire the foglights so that are on with the brights....but still controlled by the foglight swicth.

Alright I got the schematics.....

What you will need to do is cut the positive wire of both the turn signal and sidemarker. Connect the wires to the relays as the chart below.

Relay #1

pin85=ground
pin86=power from sidemarker
pin87a=power from turn signal
pin87=leave disconnected
pin30=output to both sidemarker and turn signal

Relay #2

pin85=ground
pin86=power from turn signal
pin87a=power from sidemarker
pin87=leave disconnected
pin30=output to both sidemarker and turn signal

The output of both relays(pin30) connect with each other to go to both the sidemarker and turnsignal.

Repeat the wiring setup for both sides of the car. Leave pin87 of all relays disconnected, but make sure that if you are using a relay socket to cap the end of the wire for pin87 or else it will short you car blowing three fuses. (I know from experince ;) )
Make sure to securely mount the relays. And just a note: If you have indiglo gauges, your gauges may blink with the blinker during when your lights are off depending on how you wired them. Though you can't notice it during the day and it causes no harm to the guages.

Hope this helps.....

I want to make the parking lights within my 94 headlights into Turn Signals....would this also work??

I would like to make the parking light come on like normal, but blink when the turn signals are activated.
