i'm in the process of painting my dash and i'm looking for a thread that had a how to on getting the cig. lighter out of the dash panel. if you know where i can find it or how it comes out please let me know.

Take off the dash and it will become apparent. This is from my experiences with other vehicles not my MKIV (yet). I hope this helps.

that what i thought but it isn't. i've worked on many different cars and taken dashes apart before but never had this much trouble.

What is your trouble? Taking the dash face away? First step: Pull the piece around the shifter, then unscrew the 5 screws of the upper plastic part(the one with the odometer and all the check lights), afterwards just pull the center piece (the one with the A/C controls etc.) off. It´s pretty straight forward.
