HELP ME car wont start

So i get in my car and turn the key. Everything lights up like normal but it doesnt try to crank. This sometimes happens. I turn the key to start and nothing happens. I can pull the shifter to the stopper between park and reverse and try to crank and it cranks right up...not this time. The car does nothing when i try to crank it. Does anyone have a clue? Is there a sensor in the shifter or is all of the safty stuff in the tranny itself?

I don't understand what you mean about "shifter to the stopper" but if its an intermittent problem where the engine won't turn over its likely the starter contacts.

Pull off the starter (2 bolts) and change the contacts ($30 from Toyota).

where is the park/neutral switch located? Is it on the starter itself, shifter, tranny or where? any pictures?

What i meant by the stop between park and reverse is...If you dont push the button on the shifter and pull it towards reverse it will stop and not go into reverse. When the shifter stops and i turn the key it will crank. but it didnt this time.

So i went out the next morning and it cranked right up. now it has done it again but this time it wasnt so convienient as being at my house. It is dead about 20 miles from my house. could it be the starter relay or starter? Is there a quick fix just so i can get it home?

the park/neutral switch on the left side of tranny case if you need I can send you a copy of FSM.

I am thinking maybe the started too now... You could try the good old give it a knock with a bar while cranking it and that sometimes works (need 2 people). But if it does work then you know its your starter...

sometimes when they get old they just start doing that... your going to have to just take it out and check everything.

It could be a bad solenoid. Do you hear a click when you turn the key? If you did ,it's a sign of a bad starter solenoid. I believe a bad neutral switch will not make any noise when the key is turned, similar to a completely dead battery. Good luck.

I am having this same problem. But mine happended because I cant my car to start and work properly so I was cracking my engine a lot and I forgot let me starter cool down. So now it clicks when I turn the key. The fix is just to get the starter rebuilt. This sounds like the solenoid is bad. Get the starter replaced or you will be stranded again.

I hate to bring this up but i changed the starter and it still does it after the car gets hot sometimes. I have to let it cool down for a couple of hours before it will crank again. Is there a relay under the hood that could be getting hot and not making contact. This is crazy and makes me angry.

No i havent. During the winter i didnt really have any probles because everything would cool off so fast. Now that is getting really hot it is happening more frequent. Could the heat affect the park/neutral switch like i am describing?

When you have bad/faulty electrical components the temperature, humidity, and phase of the moon can all play a factor. I would try replacing the switch or just bypassing it altogether.

I don't have direct experience with it since I am 6spd these days. The FSM would tell you for sure, and ardmore was nice enough to offer to send you a copy of it. It is mostly available on mkiv.com if you look for it.

If its a normal switch its just a matter of snipping the on either side of the switch and shorting them together.

If this really doesn't float your boat, i would really take it to toyota and let them do it. It won't take but an afternoon.

this just poped in my head. have you tried jiggling the key or the shifter while your trying to crank it? if it helps with the key you may need a ignition switch. and if its with the shifter it may be a faulty switch
