Converting a Targa to hardtop??

well, im not really a fan of the targa tops, but it seems that it will be my only option when i buy a supra, as the hard tops are hard to find and usually much more $$$...
either way... the real question.
Can i have the targa welded in, maybe add some supports on the inside and put on the hardtop liner?
Anyone do this?
any links?

Thanks in advanced for any help. i tried to search but received error messages.

I'll trade you my na hardtop lol......j/k
but this seems like something interesting. good luck with the help. I think your the first one to ask that question lol...

o and btw, is it just your preference to have a hardtop over the targa?

I do prefer hard tops over targas. I have no intention on ever owning a convertible car by any means what so ever... just never been a fan. I do drive around with the windows down on most days (other than extreme heat or rain)

I don't believe this has been attempted before, but I am sure your could have it welded to the hatch area and A-pillar in some sort of way using brackets and such... though I'm not sure why you'd want to do it... just never the the Targa off and you should be set!

This has been done 1 time before that I'm aware.

It's actually the MVP/PHR Blue car with the silver flames. Came out years ago.

yes its been done before and there is actually a thread about it somewhere. i dont remember which cars did it though, as there are more than 1 that have done the conversion.

(this sounds like im a cocky asshole, but im not... im just saying)
wouldn't the world be a wonderful place if we could all get what we wanted and did not have to mod things? I wish hard tops were as cheap as targas and available as much as targas as well.
it makes more sense... but it's not as easy.

It's been done, talked to a local owner who wanted to do it. Told me he'd have to add reinforcements and welds and body work and it wasn't too bad. It's a lot more conceivable imo than converting a hardtop to a targa anyway.

seems as doable as ridiculous, a real hardtop weights 50 pounds less than a targa. so your taking a 50 pound over a hardtop car and putting another 50 pounds or so in the frame, as good as the welding job can be it wont be 100% as perfect as a hardtop and you have that extra weight you cant get rid of since targas have extra supports you will just create a heavier car . plus all that work takes time and money, maybe alot of money for the parts and the shop, maybe you will end up wasting more money than geting a real hardtop. i would just save and wait for the right hardtop supra.

If the right hardtop shows up, of course i will take that car instead... but if i end up with a targa, i'd like to make it into a hard top... just preference.
The weight does not matter much to me, as the car will be for my pleasure only... cruising and shows/hang outs etc...
Im not gonna build a track car (that's why they make porches right?), im not building a 1000+hp car. i just want a nice, clean supra... nothing extreme.

Ok but what I'm saying is... how much do you think you'll spend to modify a targa properly to make it into a hardtop? Custom body work, new oem parts, paint, and so on. Even then it probably wont be as good as factory, and it'll never be a real hardtop (resale wise at least).
So you'll spend a LOT making it how you want it, kill the value of the car, and at the end of the day probably have spent as much as you would on an original hardtop in the first place.

FWIW, some guy on nsx prime did this, the right way buying everything from honda all the coupe parts and turning his t top nsx into a hardtop nsx, as hardtop nsx's are EXTREMELY rare past 95. Anyways iirc it cost him about what the car cost him. this is top of the line work of course and it turned out amazing but it was not cheap at all.

edit - here is the prime thread. http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61106

just by a NA hard top and do a Turbo conversion. I would much rather swap some mechanical into the correct chassis rather than try to modify the shit out of body work...

Not to be rude or anything. Can you just trade someone who has hardtop or sell yours and get hardtop supra? If you ttop to conv. you need reinforcement more weight to be strong handle, paint job, fabrication, custom headliner. With that kind of money you can upgrade your engine. Unless everything as you want it as call project. Good luck on your goals. Love to see your working process if it happens.

This is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard of doing to a Supra. It is just such a waste. There is nothing wrong with opinion and preference however, just save yourself time and money by going to buy a hard top.

Even if you make a "home made" hard top you don't get the advantage of being lighter. Not to mention having a sun roof, if you like that.

I'm going with just go buy a hard top.

#24 ·
Seriously? Just buy a NA hard top ive seen a few for like 10k to 12k.

+1 I think that's what I meant to ask in my first post too.

If i can find a TT hardtop for a decent price (even if i have to re-paint it, do interior work etc...) than of course i will buy it... the thing is, they don't show up as often as i'd like.
but i have time, and i have the money and patience to wait for something i want.
I made this thread to see if it was done, could be done, and just general response from the masses.

whitted94.... Read the first post please, especially the part about search giving me errors.
Thanks for the links tho.

if you have access to a good bodyshop and find a wrecked hardtop at your local junk yard then go for it , remove everything and anything needed from panels to quarter glass and moldings ..

I hate my targa too but I just don't take it off, if it's off everything flexes
