Corvette SS

Here's our latest look at what the Corvette folks have been working up for the ultra-fast coupe class, the 2009 Corvette SS. At least SS is the name most used in referring to this 600-plus-hp, supercharged beauty. You might think it looks like today's Corvette, except for the tape over the fenders and the black covering on the hood. But you'd be wrong.

Let’s go through the subtle—but very important—changes needed to make this a 200-mph car for the track. We think the hood covering hides a new bulge there—a necessary tweak to make room for that supercharger nestled near the vee at the top of the 6.2-liter V8 engine.

There's also a solid possibility that the new hood on the new ‘Vette is made of carbon fiber instead of the traditional Corvette fiberglass. If so, that's a major move toward weight savings. Based on the black top we’ve seen on our spy shots of this puppy in blue and then again in red—though it’s new to the yellow, which we’ve also already seen—we feel even more strongly that the prototypes are already carrying carbon-fiber black roof panels.

You might check out the stingy aero lip atop the deck in the rear. That’s new to the Corvette line, and a necessary accessory when traveling at high speed: At speed, the lip catches the air stream and forces the stream upward, creating a down pressure on the rear wheels (always good to have ultimate traction when moving at this car's hyperspeeds).

That black lower rear fascia arrangement surrounding the exhaust tips also looks new to us.

The rear view also shows new, stingy "mud flaps" that extend the fenders to cover the width of the Michelin tires. We told you before that Michelin and Goodyear were bidding for the tire contract for this vehicle, and so far it’s looking good for Michelin to take Goodyears off the Corvette for the first time ever. The Michelin sidewall details include "light load" and "outside" designations, with separate designs for each wheel. Rear wheels probably have an aspect ratio of 35 on 20-in. rims. Another detail near the fender is hidden beneath the black tape—probably two separate slots for air evacuation.

Finally, we see the design of the wheels themselves once again. Behind the dual five-spoke design on the outside of the rims, there are 10 additional spokes set inboard. As with the carbon-fiber body parts, the wheel design offers ultra-light, unsprung weight to aid handling and ride and to cut down on the vehicle's overall weight. Boy, is this beauty gonna need it.

Yow, that looks tasty. I'll take one in Quicksilver, please.
badass.. so is this supposed to be one trim above the z06? i am guessing more expensive too
suppose to cost 100k i hear. not bad for a 700+hp beast!
...sooo you guys think they did anything to change the plastics in the interior?

those wheels also look like the 2001 m5s wheels. Not sure if i like them yet..

from what i hear its gonna be serious, sucks that theyre going to the pricey route like the viper, gt40etc but i guess they have to.
im telling you right now, that car better have more asthetics to it then the same ZO6 lines...

The 08's have some nice interior upgrades. So, yes, they should be better interiors than in the past.
I like the fact that they are testing it up against the Ferrari 599, and its using the same suspension technology as the Ferrari.

How radical it looks in comparison to a regular Z06 is insignifcant. Its an upgrade over the Z06 package - not a new car.

Same thing as AMG is to Mercedes , Turbo is to Porsche 911s, Cobra is to Mustangs, Turbo was to Supras, etc etc. The bigger hood, fatter tires, brakes, rear spoiler, and front fenders will make it stand out.

EnzoX, Where did you get this info from?

Did you type it up?

Just curious. I don't want to post on another forum without a source.

or what...you'll pass on it for the viper?
I'm already hearing price gouging rumors running rampant for the Corvette SS...it won't be pretty. However, the car itself won't disappoint. I am eager to see all the tricks they employ to get the weight significantly below the current Z06 too. This is going to be a wicked car! :)
or what...you'll pass on it for the viper?
lol, no or I fear nobody will buy it. people will just buy c6 zo6's used and send them to get TT packages on them...
I want to see this monster vs the Viper.
It will be no match for the Vette. I'm not sure the new 600 hp Viper can even hang with the current Z06. Anyone know? Have they done any tests yet?

It is? Did they finally ditch the leaf springs?
Whats wrong with the leaf springs? Good enough to be one of the best handling cars on the road. :dunno:

From Motor Trend:
http://blogs.motortrend.com/6215473/car-news/corvette-blue-devil-finally-gets-a-name-zr1/index.html

Chevrolet's 650-horsepower Corvette, developed under the codename "Blue Devil," will be called ZR1. That badge will appear on the January 2008 Detroit show car, and on the production version set to go on sale later next year as a 2009 model. GM has been developing this car for several years, using a supercharged version of the new 6.2-liter small block V-8 used in the 2008 Corvette(pictured). GM also considered such names as Z07 and Super Sport for the ultra-low-volume car. Price will be much higher than the 505-horsepower Z06, and Chevy will continue production of that car when the ZR1 launches.

Chevy first used the ZR1 moniker for a reported eight cars built in the 1971 model year with a 370-horsepower, 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) small block V-8. The option cost $1,010, while a 425-horse 454 was $1,221. The '71 ZR1 came with no special bodywork or badging. Chevy revived the name in 1990 for a 32-valve Lotus-designed, Mercury Marine-built 375-horsepower quad-cam V-8. That car had a wider tail to accommodate P315/35ZR17 Goodyears on 11-inch wide wheels and was built through the '95 model year. Badges included a hyphen, as in ZR-1, which doesn't fit GM RPO nomenclature.

GM has never confirmed nor denied rumors that "ZR" stands for "Zora's Racer."

The blown 6.2 also looks like the engine that will power the next Cadillac CTS-v, rather than something based off of GM's new high-feature overhead cam V-8 debuting in '09.

What plastics are you talking about? Please don't take this personally but....It seems like its impossible to have a vette thread without someone saying the interior is inferior based on.....
Are we really going to have to bust out the pics of the vette interior again? :)

P.S. How is your LS1 swap in your 240 going? You don't live to far from me, and I would love to come see it sometime. I live in Lombard.

After reading all the differences in the article, I am sure this car is going to stand out.

I like the fact that they are testing it up against the Ferrari 599, and its using the same suspension technology as the Ferrari.

I don't know the authenticity of this, but I heard that the the C5 runs the same performance numbers as the Ferrari 360. I like how Top Gear found striking similarities in performance and aesthetics between the Ferrari 575 to the C6 Z06. So was the C6 designed with the Ferrari F430 in mind? Can anyone prove or disprove this?

What a befitting name.

Obviously they are concealing a totally different hood and side vent design. That + a supercharger = $25,000.
